Automatic sending of Live Crash Reports (OS X)

Post by Stromkraft » Thu Nov 20, 2014 3:36 am

I know how you might feel when you're working on this new track, that makes you hop up and down, in the latest release or beta of Ableton Live, and you hit a bug or do something stupid and Live crashes. If you're anything like me, the last thing you want to do when your project is back up again (hopefully without lost data) is finding that report and open your mail and send it, right? So you put it off and then you possibly even forget about it.

Wouldn't it be better if this was just done automatically? If you're on Mac and if you own Hazel and use the Mail application this can be solved (until Ableton makes this automatic). Hazel is shareware and at $29 it's not something you get just for sending crash reports, but it's very useful for other music tasks as well, like sorting samples or post-mastering file handling and I use it for automatically handling, sorting and cleaning my downloads folder. I'll be sharing those Hazel rules and Automator Workflows that are useful for other music makers.

This is how I automatically send Crash Reports to Ableton 6 hours after they're created to not disturb the music making, without doing anything but setting this up once. I created this Rule and Workflow last year when I had a period of crashes.

Create Automatic sending of Ableton Crash Reports:
  • 1. Open Automator (in Applications) and Choose "Service" in the prompt, then go to "Mail" under Library in the Actions area to the left.
  • 2. Create this workflow with the options "New Mail Message" and "Send Outgoing Messages, Make sure you chose the proper account if you use several:

  • 3. Save the created service with the name:

  • 4. In Hazel, create a new folder rule and select the folder found at "[Your User Home folder]/Library/Application Support/Ableton/Live Reports".
  • 5. In the Rules area to the right click the plus sign and enter this combination of Conditions and Actions and then click OK:

Note that when selecting the workflow service you just created, you will find it in "[Your User Home folder]/Library/Services/".
Finally, save the Rules and now your automatic workflow handling of Ableton Crash Reports means you will be a good contributor of crash data, if heaven forbid you encounter these, and yet you will not have to think anymore about sending those pesky reports.

Tested in OS X Mavericks 10.9.5.

Wow, I have never heard of Hazel but I will try it out. I may not use it for automatic crash report sending - but I sure can use it for a lot of other things!

Yeah, Hazel is great but does take some involvement. It took me some reading to make it handle subfolders. I used to do stuff like this with OS X built-in folder actions, but I stopped once I realized how much CPU that process used for watching those folders (years ago). You still had to author those scripts too and much Applescripting isn't for those with little patience, you know like musicians or music producers.

I saw you had mention you have to use the Mail app to make this work. I am using Dropbox's Mailbox app (set as my Mac's system default mail app) and tried this and was unable to get it to work. Do you know how one might be able to get this to work with other mail apps?

Well, you need a work flow or alternatively an applescript targeting Mailbox. I also have Mailbox but I don't use it on my Mac. It's alright on the phone and subpar on the Mac IMHO.
