I liked the vids, period...

If I want a course in creating engineered midi controllers i'd go to NASA

Anywayz, no really, they're nice... I think it's a pitty tho we didn't get more info on how to setup the rain fx thing, I really want to try it but with this it's erm... pretty "put your hands in the dark and if you're lucky something will come out" kinda thing

Probably everything on the right are returns. And the empty space is a dragspace.
But still. It could be that Robert has some modded version of Live with the ability to blank out tracks.

I know i could use such a feature

The rain video was really inspiring, thanks Jesse.....

The sound is unfortunately distorted, which is a bummer as it should have been easy to get a direct out signal from Robert, but anyway, ....

THANKS, bring on more of them, it inspired me to completely overhaul my Live set just days before a practically unrehearsed gig with a full live band

Friday, August 26th: Monolake performs at SubTonic, located at 107 Norfolk Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side. $5 with special Ableton prizes. 9PM-4AM."

is incorrect. It is an "Atlantic Waves" performance with me in NYC and Scott/Deadbeat in Tokyo, not a monolake concert. For the monolake concert come to PS1 on Saturday. There you will also see the monodeck in action and I am willing to answer questions and explain each part on it.

The monodeck is nothing special. It is just a MIDI controler which I made _after_ thinking of my perfect Live Set setup. The communication between Live and it is done via a MAX Patch, allowing me to control more functions with less buttons, but after all it is all pretty simple and nothing one could not do with any other box.
The reason why I made it is because I wanted a controler which has a button for each function I want, and no buttons for functions I do not need. It also had to be big enough to be used even if I am tired, drunk, stoned... but this is it.

Richie mainly failed in Montreal because his CRTL had to much functions and he lost control during the performance, btw. He tried to control 16 tracks plus video, I use 6 tracks plus video and two sends and this is all my brain can handle in a live situation. And since each single clip can contain lots of music this is absolutely sufficient.

I'm not a pro, but I do play live a lot.

I've found 6 tracks to be sort of a magic number as well...

I was wondering this exactly; 16 channels on stage sounds like an overkill.

Still, the controller looks ace.

6 tracks

can cover a lot when, particularly when you have stereo tracks and drums submixed (like in impulse):

drums, bass, guitar1, guitar2, keys, vocals: a zillion mainstream bands

percussion, strings, horns, woodwinds, basses, piano or soloist: orchestra

drums, bass, sax section, horn section, guitar or piano, vocalist: swing band

banjo1, banjo/guitar2, bass, three singers: folk/bluegrass band

bass, baritone, tenor, contralto, alto, soprano

about suggestions for videos/instructional stuff: this might be out of your intended scope, but I'd like to understand what it takes to make a fairly nice show happen with Live at the core. While it would be interesting to see what people like Hawtin etc do with Live, the music I make with Live is going to be what it is, so I'd like to understand more about tying in visualizations or lighting.

It would be useful for me to see various ways that tracks can be activated for live looping in conjunction with an instrument-- the Kid Beyond video was very good and went into this-- he uses a third party keystroke mapping software and that's cool but it seems like using MIDI learn in conjunction with Live should be able to do that 'natively' and an easy tutorial could be done: select a track, arm, start clip record, disarm, proceed to next track, repeat, then increment scene slot, repeat again.

Thanks all for these great ideas/comments. We have a lot of these movies done with some very cool and diverse artists, coming in the next few months. I hope we can satisfy the hardcore/advanced users and the newbies, and I have copied a lot of this info to keep in mind for upcoming projects. There's nothing like seeing Robert talk through Live features -- he'll make your jaw drop, so come by Sam Ash on thursday if you're in NY.
