GURU + Live?

Phatmatik is great: but the thing with guru is that it is a musical instrument to be used, abused and played with. Still, Phatmatik is perfect as a slicer, and works great with live. I also like to minimize my setup. But the directness of guru combined with a microkontrol or a triggerfinger is to much fun to resist. It is a bit addictive. My main argument with myself before bying guru was that i deserved the fun. So, even though you do not need Guru, you might want it anyway, for inspiration, creativity and fun. I already have Devine Machine - this isn't focused on percussion only and is amazing for churning up diverse loops into something totally new and inspirational. I guess Guru is better if you are focused on beats.

Given that you can drag n drop the midi directly from the VST into Live clips, plus the actual wav slices can be drag n dropped into impulse!!! It might be all I need to rejuventate my loops collection.

I´ve to check out the drag and drop you mentioned wich didn´t work in previous Live versions.

For the Live 5.5 upgrade we will have the new IMPMATIK PHATPULSE multidrummachine then!

Guru is an excellent drum machine but it is NOT a high precision loop slicer. It works perfectly well on simple loops, but don't expect it to auto slice the amen break for you.

If you do extensive breaks manipulations, you need something like Phatmatic Pro too.

Yes, this I`ve noticed too...there are not much Loops out there Guru slices without clicks and pops...actually the loops out of the library!!!

It is also limited to max 16 slices (sort of). It analyzes the loop and maps all slices to the 16 it somehow thinks sounds best.

But Guru can read rex2 files, so you could improve the actual slicing precision by pre slicing in ReCycle.

Yes, it works as long as you only use engine 1. Once you move to the next level and try to trigger patterns in engines 2-8 with Live midi clips there is some problem with clips actually stopping the patterns. They will trigger fine in shot or trigger mode from a clip, but then when you stop your clip the pattern will keep playing. Although, if that engine is selected on the Guru GUI, the same pattern will in fact stop when the clip stops.

I'm using the latest VST beta update and I bought Guru as soon as it was released. The AU doesn't sync properly in Live yet. Guru's internal sequencer in the AU will often start on beat 2 or 3 when the song starts from beat 1. Latest AU works great in Logic.

...I'll just stick with engine 1 until they fix that in the next update. I can do alot with one engine or program some patterns in the other engines in the meantime. I'm lovin' Guru though!

Up till now, I find for creation and manipulation of beats/grooves Reason far more superior then Live. But how about Reason + Live vs Guru + Live? Which combination do you prefer for beat making and why?

Guru can do everything ReDrum can and then some, while still being easy to work with. However, it is not quite a DrRex replacement but it is quite close.

If you only use Reason for beats, I say Guru comes pretty close as the ideal VST replacement.

i own Groove agent 2 , stylus RMX & GURU i wouldn't dream of just using 1 drum VST these 3 complement each other it would be hard to recommend one over the other.

because GURU is my latest buy its the one ive been using the most lately and its the most flexible of the 3 especially because it will play your WAV's and it don't just stop at drums.
The other night i took a sampler down the steel works where i work and recorded radio conversations/sirens/steam leaks/pumps/moving machinery etc got home loaded the sounds straight into GURU didn't even need an editor as you can define start and end point's in GURU itself and came up with some superb results.
(i will post a 40 second clip if anybody is interested)

Yes GURU is Superb and so flexible , but i will also still use RMX and Groove agent , like i said earlier they are all good & complement one another in a project.

PS i use CUBASE sx3 as my main host on my desktop PC , why ? well one of the reasons is every VST you buy 99.9% of the time works perfectly in cubase where as theres usually problems with other hosts so your sometimes waiting around for updates and patches.(sorry i love ableton live but this is true Guru & Reaktor being 2 examples just off the top of my head)
i have bought live 5 & operator which are on my laptop which i plan to use for future live gigs.
