Ok- so I got this working pretty nicely.
For anyone interested, here's the setup: It requires a Midi Track (MT), a Return Track (RT), and a track to serve as the Audio Source (AS) (could be a MIDI or Audio track, depending on your needs):
1) Put FM8 FX on the RT
2) Route Audio Output of AS to RT: send level = 100 and Audio To Chooser should be set to "Sends Only"
3) Route Midi in MT to RT and select the FM8 FX Device
4) Arm MT (and AS if it is a MIDI track)
5) Configure FM8 so that it outputs from the IN operator (In 'Expert' panel), or (drum roll please...) Route the IN operator through one FM8's other operators and send that to output.
The trick is getting the FM8 FX device to accept both MIDI and Audio input- and this configuration seems to work, though I don't totally understand why.
I'm excited to see what kind of musical stuff will come of this. I feel like FM has always had great possibilities, but it was a little to cold and digital- augmenting with an "acoustic" carrier should have some neat results (if I don't go overboard- which I assure you I will).
Enjoy!
