Realtime midi record with pdc
Hi all,
I'd like to request a feature that automatically compensates for any delay introduced (while using VST's which report a delay to Live) when recording a live midi track.
I'm sure all it would involve is moving back the recorded notes by the number of pdc samples.
Perhaps I'm stupid and can't see the function already there, but it's well hidden if it is (or I need new glasses) - or has it already been requested?

Ok, I think I know what you're asking for now. The amount of time from when you hit a key on the keyboard until the note is recorded by Live. This has nothing to do with latency reporting of VST's, I think you might be getting confused.
The only way you can improve this is by reducing your buffer size to get the latency down. Get it low enough where it feels really responsive and snappy without pops & clicks. You will be able to get it low enough that you don't hear the latency. For the small amount of latency that's left, you are subconciously playing ahead to compensate for it and you're perfectly in sync anyway.
There is no way to automatically compensate for this because there's no way for a computer program to "automatically" attain accurate information. There is no way for Live to know when your finger physically touched the key. Live would have to have the ability to "read your mind".
L5 also now has track delay which you can report it yourself if you know the latency!
It will +or- delay the track during playback, after it was recorded!

no, I don't think you know what I mean.
I've tested it in Logic with Elevayta's Convoboy (98ms latency reported), and I can lay a 4/4 beat on track 1, put two convoboys after it, stick a piano on track 2, play on the beat (I CAN play on the beat) and on playback it compensates for the latency introduced by the ConvoBoys perfectly.
Live, on the other hand doesn't.
I'm not asking for Live to be in the slightest bit intelligent in this operation. All I want is for it to move the notes I just recorded back the same amount of latency time so when it plays back, it sounds like it did when I recorded it!

Ok since you didn't say what a convoboy is I did a search. So it's a VST impulse/response reverb...and I see that you are on PC now and I'm on a Mac...
I haven't heard any noticeable delay when adding effects to my performaces or even when using quantized midi notes with the pencil tool. The rendered audio files generated from the quantized midi notes are on the beat pretty exact, although I don't remember which plugs I was using. I will try to do some more testing with more effects with pdc on and see if they introduce latency.
Maybe the convoboy has an extreme amount of latency and it's not really reporting it's latency to Live. Maybe convoboy doesn't fully support Live's particular pdc yet, so elevayta needs to add the feature.
In any case, you don't want to do it manually and use the track delay in L5?

You can try this with any fft-based plugin - they all report latency as they need time to buffer the audio. Put it on one track with clear sharp transients (kik+snare?), and record something else on another track using an external keyboard. I would expect to hear back EXACTLY what I played in, but I don't - it's late.
ConvoBoy reoprts it's latency perfectly, it's not ConvoBoy.

Ok, yes that's making more sense now that you explained exactly what you're doing. I guess I learned something new. I thought this is exactly what the new pdc feature in L5 compensates for. I haven't tested it myself though. So this means it's not working with 3rd party plugs?
