Re: Richie Hawtin you idiot.
So disappointing to see techno taking a trashing like this on the Ableton forum. I was an IDM guy for a long time (still am) and talked my fair share about regular techno being boring and simple. Then I grew up and realized that everything I liked was inspired by techno and I traced the sounds and inspirations back to the sound of my hometown Detroit and to some extent the electro of New York. There's tons of inspiration left to be found in those old tracks if you can manage to listen with fresh ears rather than the ears of a critic. Maybe some drugs would help Tom. They do give you that exciting sense of discovery and wonder rather than the negative, critical, jaded feeling that so easily overcomes artists.

Re: Richie Hawtin you idiot.
I may have talked myself a little into a corner here, when I talked about my impressions from the 90s
There was obviously a wide range of artists back then and that means that some of them must have been good. (If they were though, then they were rarely played in the clubs in Berlin at the time that I went to)
I just recently rediscovered Aphex Twins Ambient Works 85-92 (Not the famous Ambient Works 2)
I had always diregarded that album, because it was clearly a misnomer, since nothing on that album is "Ambient", but it is pretty decent, if standard Techno.
Listening to that album in the right light shows some quite early and well made Techno. (Though I have a hard time believing the '85 timeframe - that would make him one of the earliest persons making Techno at all)
Mostly because they kill your sensibilities for subtle aspects of music.
And I'm not talking from a position of a conservative "drugs are always bad for you" point of view.
I have taken way too many and way too often to these kinds of stimulations. And my experience is that they ALWAYS break more than they allow you to build.
Just recently I talked to a DJ guy here in Berlin, who plays the better underground techno clubs (met him in a bar). I asked him how much he gets per gig. He answered that the DJs in these clubs don't get money (apparently that's somehow against the spirit
), but they play for coke!
He said that in a manner, that made it clear that he thought that this would impress me somehow. Like showing off how much he's with it.
All I could think of was a back alley whore turning tricks for crack/meth.

No they wouldn't. It's rather the opposite, they destroy everything that is deep and important.SuburbanThug wrote: Maybe some drugs would help Tom. They do give you that exciting sense of discovery and wonder rather than the negative, critical, jaded feeling that so easily overcomes artists.

Re: Richie Hawtin you idiot.
Yo, techno is eighties man. Cybotron (Juan Atkins) released their first single in '81. No UFO's came out in 1985. Techno is NOT a 90's thing though it definitely became more popular in that time. Maybe Aphex Twin is fudging a bit but really that album sounds like 80's to me.
Speaking of Richie Hawtin and drugs, the first time I smoked weed I was listening to Sheet One by Plastikman. The acid lines suddenly sounded like they were coming from inside my head. Pretty fun, haha. A lot of that stuff does sound dated but so does almost all music. Sheet One and even Consumed were amazing in their day. I will still listen to Consumed.
