Can you create MIDI Channel-specific Envelopes on a Clip?

Post by Darkecho » Fri Oct 19, 2012 2:35 am

I am using Kontakt as a sampler for a VI called LASS - its strings basically.

The thing is, for LASS the velocity is basically controlled by the mod wheel, and I have a quartet, and each are set to their own MIDI channel (1-4). I want the violins to get loud and the violas to get soft, so I have to create a mod wheel curve/envelope, but it seems like it controls all of the channels, or none of them. I cant figure out how to get it to let me make a mod wheel curve envelope for one MIDI channel, and another mod wheel curve for another MIDI channel on the SAME clip. Anyone know if there is a way to do this? I can do it in Logic using the event window.

I don't know if you can do this that way. I use Kontakt with multiple MIDI channels but using different instruments loaded into it each pointing to respective MIDI channels which have their own clips. I am not doing anything fancier than that at this time (when I get off my duff to get back to this stuff....). Can you load multiple instances of LASS into Kontakt and point each to different MIDI tracks/channels and have your individual clips on each track for each instrument then mess with the envelope for automation there for each clip? I think that may be the only way to go but I most certainly could be quite wrong on it too ;-)

You're right - thats actually a really convenient way to do it, actually. In Logic I would have one midi track with all of the notes for my string quartet in one region/clip - then I'd have to go in and change all of the note channels individually, and the envelopes etc.. a real pain. I thought that was the way to go but I just found this walkthrough and man it seems WAY better this way:

Thanks!

For the record, the reason you were only able to send on all or no channels is because Live doesn't support multi-channel MIDI.

For the record: At least with Ableton Live 9 Suite it's possible to send an envelope to a specific MIDI channel on a specific MIDI interface: In the MIDI track in Session view, section "MIDI To": Select a MIDI interface and below select a MIDI channel.
