New to Music Production need some help :)

Post by wxnder » Mon Feb 16, 2015 10:53 pm

So I love the trap, dubstep, remix sort of genres and recently I wanted to attempt making some of my own so I got the abelton live 9 trial to check it out because I know Flume and Skrillex use it. I looked at a bunch of able tons tutorials and some online on YouTube but I'm still kind of confused. Can someone please help me figure it out and get on the right path to trap/remixes/dubsteps dj-ing?
Thanks :D

That's a pretty broad question, so you're probably not going to get a lot of answers.

But, I would start by either looking for remix competitions in the genres you like, or download/purchase some loops in those genres and start making some stuff that way. You need to learn the DAW first and foremost, and creating everything from scratch from the get go is a big undertaking.

Once you get more familiar with the DAW and your workflow, you can begin adding your own stuff, doing sound design, creating your own beats, etc.

So I have live 9, do you have any suggestions on how to get used to it and creating simple things to really get a feel for it?
I know I won't be diplo in a matter of seconds but any tips for getting fairly familiar to the program?

What aspects of the program are you confused specifically about after going through the tutorials?

Start things very simply... can you create a beat?
- create a MIDI track
- place an impulse on it
- slide a kick, snare and hats into the impulse slots or use an impulse with sounds in it
- make a midi clip for this track
- draw in some beat patterns in the midi clip

Can you do that? if not, check the manual how to do it

Next, make another MIDI track and with an operator create a bass line.
can you do that? if not, check the manual how to do it

etc...
