Volume fader for midi track that transmits Midi cc#7?
Volume fader for midi track that transmits Midi cc#7?
Hi all,
Is there a way to create a volume fader for a midi track in Live?
IE I want a fader that will transmit midi volume control (MIDI CC
7) out to a external module to control the volume level directly in the module rather than the gain on the way back into Ableton.
The reason being is that I have several synths that I use that are multitimbral that are summed in a mixer which comes into Live as a stereo pair.

Do you have Max For Live ?

I do.
I searched Max4live.com for a fader etc and didn't find anything, but here's hoping that I missed something!

Two things that may or may not be possible.
1. Map a knob in Live to the volume of your device. Chances are, Live will transmit the cc back to the device whenever you change it, as long as you send midi back to it.
2. I think I've been able to just use a looping blank midi clip with no automation for cc7, and simply move the individual line as a whole up or down in the automation as a fader. Not very sleek, and it may have been in Live 8.

It must be a soft fader? As you can paint MIDI volume data in the track in question, all you should need is mapping any controller to MIDI volume CC to be able to send that to the MIDI channel where you want a response, keeping different voices on different tracks by MIDI channel I suppose.Meta wrote:Hi all,

See "multi-mode" in the "Using external hardware with Live" chapter of the manual.
Make some music!
Re: Volume fader for midi track that transmits Midi cc#7?
Both good ideas which I'll explore after I get some sleep, but the reason why I'm after a fader is so my Mackie Control Universal will grab it so I can record tactile fader automation etc.
Thanks guys

Re: Volume fader for midi track that transmits Midi cc#7?
So it seems that what I need to do is add a external instrument set to transmit to the proper midi port with no audio input set (as the external midi hardware unit is being summed in a external hardware mixer). The external instrument creates a fader that Live automaps to the Mackie Control Universal.
So that creates the link between the fader and the Mackie.
I think the next step is to create a midi fader in Max for live that transmits Midi CC7 on the right port and channel thats somehow linked/slaved to the external instrument fader.
As I've never programmed anything in Max4live this will be challenging to figure out just how to do it, but hopefully a fun learning curve : )

Re: Volume fader for midi track that transmits Midi cc#7?
Have you tried simply adding an empty midi or audio rack and mapping a knob on it to cc7?
From the sound of it, your controller just maps instantly to the knobs anyway. So if a knob is mapped to 7, and you change it using your controller which is 'universally' mapped, Live should transmit an update of that knob back out as cc7.
Otherwise there are a few vst's that do just midi (there is a Reaper vst collection available for free that has midi). That should do the trick.

Re: Volume fader for midi track that transmits Midi cc#7?
Sorry, I was away from my computer for a while.
The problem is that I can't just click on a slider/knob in live and assign a midi cc to it (as far as I can tell.) I have to click on Midi map and then move a external midi controller in order to map the slider. And then it doesn't seem to actually transmit that midi cc value, just respond to it.
The Mackie Universal Control transmits and responds to sysex and Ableton has done a decent job of implementing it as a control surface - but as the sliders themselves don't transmit midi CC 7 I can't map the slider of an external audio instrument to it just to send midi CC (I'd love to be proven wrong about this!)
Great suggestions though and thank you very much! : )

In M4L, you can patch this very quickly.
