Asking those using 11" Macbook Air with Live..

Post by 5argon » Tue Mar 10, 2015 7:10 pm

I planned to buy mac laptop after hearing yesterday's release keynote. I'm currently deciding between 11" MBA and 13" MBP Retina which both receive 5th gen Intel CPU update.

Of course in an instant I ask anyone with the word "make music" they would say go for MBP very quickly. But I absolutely love the form on 11" MBA. (If there exist 11" MBP I would go for it without doubt) and since the CPU will get updated into Intel 5th gen, if the spec is somewhat workable I think this mini-notebook will worth some performance sacrifice because I will wanted to take it everywhere to make music or also with some occasional programming. It is the smallest 'workable' laptop in the world that I like. Just thinking about taking it anywhere already excite me.

And Live is suitable for smaller screen too since there are not a lot of popups windows asides from VST popups.

I'm not concerning about 11" screen size, but my main concern is its 1.6Ghz i5 (Gen 5) CPU. How well will it perform under, like, 10 Massive instances for example? Are there any concerns I overlooked?

It can also upgrade to 2.2 Ghz i7 too but I think that will have negative impact on battery life. I will choose 8GB RAM option and 256 GB flash storage if I'm going to buy it.

The 13” MBPr is probably the least sexy of the Apple laptops but it’s probably also the best bang for your buck.

As sleek as MBAs are, they aren’t very forward thinking and probably have half the life expectancy of a beefier laptop if you plan to work on audio or video and updating and adding new software. I have a 13” and 11” MBA that are several years old and the fans always go on like crazy if I start doing something graphically or musically intensive. I didn't push them too hard though because I have my iMac for music production.

I would love that apple offered the quad core processor on the 13" model just for the sake of portability, even if it had the same price tag as the 15" model.

Why only big laptops can have the i7 quad core?

Simple. Gives people an incentive to buy the 15” beyond just the screen size. Apple is very crafty with their spec options that usually points to buying the more expensive model.

Maybe for you just paying a little more for the better processor in the 13” would make sense, but a lot of people want to see 2, 3, or 4 things that makes the more expensive option more desirable...and the cheaper option less desirable.

Weighing Apple computer spec differences is a long line of :) :x :) :x :) :x unless you’re going in expecting to drop $3,000 as a starting point.

i needed to buy a new laptop after my 2011 "15 i5 quadcore sh•t the bed. i went with the 13" mbpr and have found it to be just as powerful and must faster all around despite its dual core.
