Configuring Push for Live Performance

Post by rjcoolpix880 » Wed Mar 18, 2015 4:54 pm

I am trying out using the Push for when i play at church and trying to think about the best way to set it up. I dont run loops or tracks, i just use it for synths and audio effects. The key is being able to transition between songs/instruments quickly and smoothly.

my current setup (which works great) is using a MPK61 to play the synths and i have the faders set up to control:
  • volume of external keyboard (nord)
    volume of VST synth 1
volume of VSY synth 2 (i usually mix the 2 synths together to push the more aggressive sounds during loud parts)
volume of delay (on master track)
volume of reverb (on master track)
    cutoff freq of synth 1
    cutoff freq of synth 2
(i also have used it for things like sustain/decay on synths when i'm using an arpeggiator)
what works nice is that i can easily set the faders to be whatever i want. i looked through the manual and i wish that there was a way to make the top knobs on Push be generic controllers that i can map to ANY parameter in Ableton like i would with the MPK faders.

Here is the best thing i can think of is to do in Push:
  • switch between the sends and volume on the top knobs (not sure how that would work with more than 1 send (easily))
use the top rectangular buttons to mute various tracks(synths)
How can i easily change things like cutoff while playing and tweak the volume??
Any suggestions or tips?

i keep thinking about getting it, but there are things i would rather spend the money on that would be more fun.

Too bad, i have a device that allows you to have 6 extra banks for the Encoders that you can switch between...

Push can only be mapped in User Mode and doesn't display the names on the dials, Oktopush provides mapping in Session and Note Mode and does display the mapped parameters on the dials...

I figured out a good solution.
i switched between the track and device mode.
- set up a few 'sends'
- for the synths i put everything in a instrument rack and set the 8 macro knobs to whatever i wanted. As long as that instrument rack was at the 'top' level, it would show the macros when i switched to that device in device mode.
- for the live instruments i set it to track mode, it would show all the sends. allowing me to add effects as needed.

this allows me to have more control than before when playing a live set using my MPK

You could also drop all your synths into one instrument rack, distribute the ranges of each synth across the key timeline so that no 2 synths overlap each other then map the chain selector to 1 macro. In doing so you can nice and easily turn the macro to switch in between your instruments therefore leaving your device macros alone so one you've selected your synth(using chain selector) then the device macros and associated parameters won't be affected. Any questions hit me up, @JU5TbyCHANCE or www. ju5tbychance.com
