Latency at 12.2ms but it seems way more than that

Post by alexfsu » Thu Mar 26, 2015 7:24 pm

It seems like a half or a third of a second, from when I press a pad on Push and light lights up, nowhere near 12.2ms like it says in Prefs. What's the deal you guys think? Thanks.

Wow, nice system :D

Okay so you've adjusted your buffer settings in preferences? what are they set at?
Also are you using your audio interface drivers directly (or as an aggregate device?) and have they been updated to the latest versions?

Do you have any latency inducing plugins in the signal chain?

Are you using the internal DSP processing? If you remove the UAD plugs does the latency issue go away?

Also see if you get the same latency using just the internal MacBook Pro audio with Core Audio (aka disconnect the Apollo).
At least then you can determine if it's the Audio interface or Ableton Live/MacBook Pro

I have it at 512 samples going at 12.2ms. I don't have any latency inducing plugins, but I do have a ton of UAD. Removing all of them seemed to make it better, although I bought this interface because of the lack of latency, esp. going thru Thunderbolt.

Core audio didn't change things, and I"m not using an aggregate device. Drivers were just downloaded last week.

What does it mean 'I dont have any latency inducing plug ins' ?

If you start a fresh set. Remove every single plug in from the master, returns, all midi and audio channels. Not just turn them Off, but remove them completely.

And then load an instrument or audio input, do you still have the latency problem?

I just started a new project with only an Operator instance. I can definitely notice a delay even though it says 11.6ms in Preferences. It's like 1/4 to a 1/3 sec delay.

That's 250 to 333ms, i e not normal. It is unlikely this is normal latency. The latency in the audio settings are just for the time from the event in Live to audio. MIDI latency is added to the full latency calculated from when you press a key or a button.

A natural place to start would have been Apollo Twin Support Information if you had decided your twin was involved. But you say this latency is present also without it connected?

Not sure if this may help but see section "Driver Error Compensation".

Is this latency only with push or with all midi controllers?

that new option under Options for Beta 9.2 called 'Reduced Latency when Monitoring" seems to help a lot, but its good to have that error compensation thing as a backup, thanks.

alexfu, you're not leaving a lot of info with which we could assist you. You seem to describe an abnormal situation. What have you done to get back to normal? Use isolation, get rid of everything including audio interface. Is the latency still there or not? Borrow another machine, boot up from another OS installation. If that is different, it's your machine.

Sounds to me you're looking at re-installation.

For one thing, do something about your latency assessment. Use a stop watch. If it's really more than half a second, you can measure it with a stop watch. You likely have one in your phone.

There are also tools to measure latency, you could look into. I never needed to use these myself.
