Tips for better monitor positioning?

Post by purpleduck » Sun Apr 26, 2015 6:41 pm

Can somebody help me figure out where I should place my desk and monitors for more accurate sound? They are Yamaha HS80ms.

I have made some rough interactive panoramas, so you can get a sense of my studio space. It's a pretty irregular and asymmetric room so it's not easy for me to underdstand where I should put myself. It's a single room that looks like two divided by a semi-open wall. I have large windows on one of the shortest sides, which face to a street on the third floor of a building. I don't want to place my desk and monitors there as somebody suggested because the windows aren't thick at all and the closer I am the more I hear traffic noise. Also they're old and when it rains some water can pour in, and I don't want that next to equipment.

From my understanding the ideal position for the desk would probably be on the shortest side opposite the windows, but I do not intend to face that wall as it's too "sad". But where it is now it's probably not good, as I've read that in the center of the room you get a bass "dip" to be avoided.

I was thinking of placing the desk next to where the TV is now, alongside the larger wall, at some distance from it. Would I benefit from bass traps behind the monitors at that point, and maybe something in front of them on the other side? Problem is, on the other side I get a HOLE leading to the other part of the room. It's probably not a "simple" room. Also the windows probably create asymmetric havoc with the frequencies.

It's definitely an unprofessional space as it is now but I'm serious on improving my electronic music and quality of mixes (done that for a few years now and planning on buying more synths and gear, but I'm totally ok in the box for now), so I want to know what I can do to make it better, starting with monitoring position - for what can be done. And of course bass traps and the sorts.

Would pushing the desk next to the tv be a better bet than leaving it kind of in the middle as it is now? I've read it's important to be as symmetric as possible but there is no symmetry whatsoever in this room.

Cheers

in your favour is the fact that the room isn't small. if you are serious about finding the best arrangement i would get FuzzMeasure or Room EQ Wizard (free) and a measurement mic and learn how to use them. and you definitely need acoustic treatment if you want to tame the sound in the room.

this is my favourite studio design forum:

if you make a 3D sketch of your room with dimensions and post them there with your photos you can get free expert help. read the forum guidelines before you post though...
