Everyone uses the MPD32... what's the template/story?

Post by twoohfour » Sun Apr 26, 2015 6:46 pm

So, it seems like pretty much everyone uses the MPD 32 now...

From Lunice to Gesaffelstein to Flying Lotus to Tensnake... From OG house guys to weird music guys. They're doing their sets in Ableton with an MPD 32.

There are some obvious reasons for this:
-- Readily available in any city in the world
-- Solid enough construction
-- Not prohibitively expensive

However:
-- There's no ready-made template for DJing or Live performance.

So, what's the story? I imagine there is some template they are all using, but if so, I haven't found it??

Or, are they all just making pre-made sets and then pretending to twist knobs a la: http://www.residentadvisor.net/images/n ... ged-in.jpg

PS: This is *not* an invitation to some stupid flame war. Pre-made sets are totally fine and I don't give a sh :!: t whether or not they are 'twisting knobs' in advance or in real time.

Not an ableton template, but Nativekontrol's Stray does amazing work with scripting for some of the devices I use, I would guess this one is equally amazing:

Scripts, not templetes are what make a controllers good or bad for Live. MPD 32 has the one by nativekontrol, thats why it has advantages.

Making scripts isnt easy at all.

Thanks for the NativeKontrol link... Yeah, sometimes they are bundled into a "template" which is why I referred to it as such (i.e. the ill gates templates or similar)

yeah, it looks quite excellent for studio use

very flexible for live use as well, perhaps that's what they are doing?

Everyone has their own way of working, finding out what works for you is all that matters really. For me anyway, those nativekontrol scripts are great because with them, even my dinky little nanokontrol v1 can navigate a set, launch clips, control Live devices, control a bank of custom-designed sets of actions, and control transport, the mixer, and more. It is definitely *a* good way to increase the usefulness of your controller.

Have you used the rewind and fast-forward buttons on the nanoKontrol successfully?

I went into Guitar Center today and tested a nanoKONTROL2, and found that the rew and ffw buttons did move the orange insert marker, but that the black playhead line would not start from the position I just moved the insert marker to after I pressed the play button.

I'm interested in checking out nK's scripts... has anyone running NPKLive_II noticed a disparity between moving the insert marker and starting the playhead from that position?
