Hi all. Just came across this problem when recording a live set the other day. I'm glad to see a thread about it. Anybody have any recent information about this, if Ableton are still working on a fix etc. I'm on Live 9.1.7 and the bug still there.

I want to be able to do this recording workflow also.

Thanks for creating this post - especially elzinko and jackson88.

Hopefully Ableton will make this feature possible in the future.

I will also message them and let them know there are more people out there that want this feature. Cheers.

I created a thread in the feature request section. For those of you who want this workflow, be sure to reply to this thread with a "+1".

My guess is the more people that show an interest in this feature, the more likely Ableton is to make it a priority.

Cheers.

I had a thought... maybe I can use the sequencer in my maschine to send pattern/sequened MIDI notes into Ableton, and simultaneously improvise over those notes?

I will try to test it out in the next week or two and post the results...

If it works, there may be a way for people who don't use Maschine to do it aswell, say, with an M4L device acting as a source of pattern/sequenced notes.

...i reckon that will work since you don't "block" the instrument with a clip...but it's not a solution for me since i want just one place where i have my sequences...btw i contacted ableton regarding this and they called it a "bug" so here's hope for a solution...!...

People asked for in-clip automation recording for a long time, and it took several versions to appear. We have to be patient :)

i have the same issue. for ex. i hit global record, my clips start playing and i have a channel with a piano. i have a clip on it with a 2 bar loop and i want to jam on top of it but not record on the loop just on the arrangement. my workaround is i make the loop as big as it gets, Live allows a 1024 loop so i can jam on top of it and my jam won't loop, only the keys that are ''loop duplicated'' .

So... I found a solution...

Forgive the poor quality of my narration... there is a latency in my screencast software and it's very distracting... but... here you go!

Thx for this workaround (trick i already experiment) but i'm pretty sûre it does not resolve the problem. It is not convenient if you have many tracks as you have to duplicate and launch them manualy. What if you want to play realtime and change your instrument params (as you're on a midi track) ? It will lead to some other workaround like using a midimapper, but this leads to an over complicated environment.
Arrangement mode still remain the simplest way yo achieve what is asked. We only wait Ableton understand ans believe we are on thé right way before we can perform live and record at the samedi time
Thanks anyway for your vidéo!

I did not test cause i am not at home, but i'll try tonight.

@Inversoundzzz, I now believe there is one bug. you
lol, yea, honestly, i apologize for sounding abrupt.....at the time I was using Live in a different way and couldn't understand how/why you would be using Live like that....

i also wasn't thinking of drumracks, i was thinking of pure full note range regular midi tracks....so i couldn't understand why you would want to overdub new notes (of a synth line lets say) over existing notes of the same synth line...lol......and you could just create another track anyway...for that so i didn't get why you rthought it was such a problem

the way i am using live now though i see the problem..and its a problem for drumracks.....I totally agree that this is a problem.......even though you can overcome it by recording into the clip itself.....it would still be nice to be able to "record thru" the playing clip into the arrangement while it's recording.....

for drum racks this is pretty much a given....like because of the pads....you might have an existing hihat midi pattern, and you record to arrrangement that pattern...but then you want to overdub a snare into the arrangement but not the clip.....
