Predestination. Australian movie that I don’t think ever made it to the big screen in the US but is available on VOD on itunes and possibly other sources. If you like time travel and/or mind fuck movies then I recommend.

I liked Upstream too, very weird movie though for sure. Just watched Predestination last night as well and really enjoyed it, talk about a head trip by the end. Thanks for the recommendation.

Anyone seen Coherence? That's next up for later tonight I think.

Watched Going Clear on HBO, a new Scientology documentary. Pretty interesting and horrifying, but at this point not a lot of new info if you’ve been following the news on Scientology at all. I think the cult is about to crumble if for no other reason than the scathing documentary actually got released. Scientology is the grand master of lawsuits that in the past made it not worth the effort to try to expose their dirt. They even got the IRS to give them tax exempt religion status through flooding the court system with nonrelated lawsuits against the IRS. “Give us tax exemption and the lawsuits will disappear.” Done.

I’ve got zero nostalgia for the original Mad Max series and find it kind of hard to believe Rotten Tomatoes critics gave the reboot 98% and viewers gave it 92%. Sort of less surprised about the viewer ratings because it’s probably mostly people who would go see a Mad Max movie. I highly doubt its full of art house snobs going “I was pleasantly shocked…”

Might go check it out this weekend.

It's fucking great.

And it's not really a reboot. It's not entirely clear what it is really. It's like some kind of combination of a sequel, a remake, and a reboot.

Is it good even if you aren’t into car chases and gun battles? There's an actual story?

The story is told through the action. Miller (guy who has written and directed all of the Mad Max films including this one) likes to say that he makes "silent films with sound" and that kind of sums up his storytelling.

Things aren't often explicitly spelled out with melodrama and instead you're just sort of dropped into this world; it doesn't hold your hand to figure out what the hell is going on.

In that sense it's probably much more "arthouse" than you think.

Maybe. Apocalyptic dystopias where people use 90% of the few remaining resources to pimp their ride and make steampunk weaponry has never really been my bag.

I'll take your word for it, tapper. I'm psyched.

On another note saw Avengers and I had low expectations due to early reviews but I thought it was pretty good. A more involved person said it's really just a setup for the next one so that's cool but since Marvel was so demanding it fucked up Whedons mojo so he won't be directing it. Hopefully it will go to a good up and comer.

Back to Max, I think it's already a go for more and possibly whatshername will stay in them so that's cool too. I've never been into steampunk either but it doesn't seem like a steampunk world, just some bits and pieces of stuff.
