Nemoy, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed those video's on your youtube channel. Especially "Everybody loves red clay" I'm a sucker for that old sound lol.
Would be interested in hearing how you run your setup live. If i've not already missed it in another thread on a video (best I go check)
Mastering & Live Performance
Re: Mastering & Live Performance
Hey, Thank you very much!
Well,my live setup isn't actually that complicated.
I built this: http://schtubu.com/2011/02/02/vintage-apc-60/apc60/
(wich I later found out seems to be known as the APC 80 mod by a guy called "controlled demolition")
this gives me control over 16 channels (volume, rec arm, clip launch grid etc..)
That's the center piece, where all the arranging & mixing & FX tweaking is done on the fly.
The APC 40's Footswitch 2 repeats whatever the last command was, and that's essentially
how my live looping works: record arm a track, start recording a clip, play something,
and loop it with the footswitch. That works for all of the 16 Channels...
For midi channels, i have empty midi clips placed in the slots. And i work with
midi overdub. This way, i can drag&drop grooves onto the empty clips,
and as soon as i record something in this clip, it's quantised not to
the straight 16th grid, but to whatever groove i've chosen earlier.
I use ableton in session view only, and try to use max 5 scenes per song.
that way i can easily navigate through my entire liveset, because
SHIFT up, or SHIFT down on the APC 40 always makes jumps of 5 scenes.
That way i can jump from one song to another with just one button.
If you name the first scene of a song "103 BPM" on launching that scene,
it automatically changes tempo to whatever value is in there. so i can freely
jump from one song to another withour having to worry about tempo...
hardwarewise, i've got a macbook pro, The apc40/20, 2 launchpads, a Kaoss pad 3,
and an RME fireface, where i can plug in all of the instruments & microphones needed.
(Fender Rhodes, Bass guitar, Korg R3 synth, vibraphone, congas etc.)
every instrument then has it's own channel in live, to avoid confusion
Channel 1 for example is a midi channel for drums, where i've got a drumrack full
of single drumsamples, with a novation launchpad, that is used only for triggering drums.
That way i have all the drums i need for my concert ready all the time, and i dont have
to browse trough different drumsets, or menues or stuff...
Channel 2 is basically the same thing, with another dedicated Launchpad, but this time, Drumrack is
filled with little melodical samples & shreds.
Channel 3 is Fender Rhodes only,
etc. etc...
I also sometimes use pre recorded clips, especially for bridges, or B Parts...
i can record & loop only one thing at a time, so to make bigger changes
in a song, i needed to work with prerecorded clips... i whish though i could find another solution for that
wow, sorry, that's a lot of text
hope this can be useful for someone out there?
cheers!
