Offer Ableton Drive (All Packs Preloaded on SSD)

Post by miekwave » Sat Jun 20, 2015 7:05 am

I was transferring files to my new computer and spent a lot of time reintegrating my packs into my new system.

If Ableton would to have a product called "Ableton Drive" on SSD that would be awesome.

• Samsung 850 Pro 256 GB, 512GB, 1TB
(I am very pleased with my Samsung 840 Pro and will be getting another 850 pro)

Ableton Drive (External)
• Custom Ableton Shockproof Housing with USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connectivity

Ableon Drive (Internal)
• Option to order Standalong SSD for Installation into SATA

Features
• Drive is available to all Ableton Suite 9 customers
• Comes preloaded with all Ableton Suite 9 Packs
• Preloaded with MAX4LIVE
• Instant Plug-n-play compatibility with Ableton 9
• Drive has dedicated user folder slots optimized for
32-bit VST
64-bit VST
User Library
Temporary Folder
Cache Folder
• 3 Minute Installation Tutorial (YouTube Video) for external vs. internal installation, VST Migration tutorial, 850 Pro SSD Maintenance and Optimization tutorial and do-it-yourself with your own SSD tutorial

This product would (semi) compete with similar SSD product offerings from EWQL and NI

Ableton Drive (Exsternal)
256 GB (All Packs) $349
512 GB (All Packs) $599
1 TB (All Packs) $849

Ableton Drive (Internal)
256 GB (All Packs) $299
512 GB (All Packs) $549
1 TB (All Packs) $799

512 or 1TB is recommended if you want to install NI Komplete, EWQL Instrument, Omnisphere or other 3rd party Massive instrument collections

This product would basically serve the "I am installing Ableton to a new PC" market that needs the most efficient solution to install packs and migrate VST's over.

While on topic, a Ableton optimized Projects drive would help too

Ableton Drive: Projects Edition (External)
Standard: (For less than 20 track counts@ 24-bit 44k)
1 TB 7200 Black: Preloaded with project session templates folder
Pro: (For less than 32 track counts @ 24-bit 96k)

2 TB 7200 Black (Raid 0) - Special housing optimized for fast load times, ridiculously high trackcounts at highest fidelity and load times
Thunderbolt, USB 3, eSATA

Pro HD: (for more than 90 track counts @24-bit 96k or 192k)
2 TB Raptor (Raid 0) - Thunderbolt, USB 3, eSATA

But please... I know people will pay anything for convenience, but how hard is it to just make a clone?!? My last computer switch took 1,5 h, didn't reinstalled anything.

You're right, cloning is also a good option and I have done that with prior systems. However in my instance I needed a fresh OS and clean slate, so cloning was not an option for my case. I did transfer all the files over but encountered some errors because of different drive letters and folder locations for the new system, so I had to reinstall a bunch of 3rd party VST and I have to reintegrate various presets in my user library.

For me the convenience is worth the price as this solution would work with any new system moving forward without requiring the clone treatment, especially for users who need a fresh OS slate.

Why don't you buy the drive yourself and put all our packs on it?
I think it's way more convenient to be able to download every pack anytime as it is now.

Samsung 850 Pro is by far the best SSD on the market (besides specialized intel server SSDs) The waranty is 10 Years on those by Samsung. Ableton can service software warranty for 90 days and free software upgrades for 1 year.

I already bought the drive and have the packs on there. That's why I created this feature request.
And also downloading 100+GB of content takes a long time, packs are huge, especially the Orchestral Strings, Winds, Brass, Mallots packs.

If Ableton would have to do it for you, they'll also have to charge you for the work (they'll need people, to deal with the SSD supplier, people to take care of the installing procedure, the cost of computers/servers dedicated to it, and so on...), plus the extra money every sellers takes on a products he buys to re-sell.

Hi Vil. Suppose they sell 1000 units in 90 days.
A. Samsung SSD lots are discounted by the vendor with lot sales
B. Load the data using a master image on all drives in the lot order
C. Package for retail or shipping
D. Ableton and Samsung get cross promotional links for marketing purposes
E. Make available to purchase.
F. New Samsung series 7 Series 9 laptops come preloaded with Ableton le. (Licence)

Purchasing lots is a lot easier than you might think.
