pcr-30 or Radium midi controller?

Post by fuentes925 » Sun Jun 01, 2003 5:04 am

Hello Live users
I am interested in either the Pcr-30 or small radium midi controllers. Any body have any experience with these, or heard any problems when using with Live. How is the key action of the controllers? How does the build quality compare between the 2 unit's. Just looking for some opinions before I make my dicision.

Hey Fuentes,

Build and action wise, in my opinion the Roland is the safer bet.

Depending on your needs and playing style you might find the keyboard range (32keys) a little limited, but it's still an improvement on Oxygen8 and Remote25. Radium at 49 keys will be less portable but more playable range wise.

My only gripe about Roland synths/controllers is the pitch/mod stick!

how can you sat it's better than the remote 25, or are you just talking about the octave range?

Just talking about octave range!

It's the thing that frustrates me most about my Nord Mod Keyboard.

At least they've added another octave to the new G2...

ive got an edirol pcr30 and its not as pro as you would expect from roland. the controller values step up in 3s not 1s and the pitch bend steps (although you would only hear it on slow pitch bends). having said that for the money it is fantastic and im very happy with it.

i am surprised edirol/roland are willing to risk their reputation like that though...

Roland will, supposedly, exchange an older PCR-30 for the newer one that increments properly...

I am aware of the problem with the older unit's and I know all the new unit's are now fixed, so that does not bother me. What I would like to know about the pcr-30 is does the pitch bend or mod. wheel fucntion on it snap back to center when let go or does it stay where last placed? I recall trying a pcr-50 at a shop a while ago and I remember it's pitch bend and mod. wheel snapping back to center when let go, but it has been a while and I could be mistaken. It would really bother me if they snapped to center when let go. Any body know about this, let me know. Also is the pitch bend and mod wheel midi programable?

PCR-30 rocks!
The only usb device I've ever bought that overdelivered. I might not call it "professional" just because the build quality doesn't feel that strong, but it works great.

forgot to answer you mod wheel questions: yes it snaps back and is programmable.

Bad news!
I just bought the pcr-30 yesterday and found that the second fader labled (S 2) does not send midi. I tried it with Reasons, Live and Traktor dj and all 3 programs do not responed to that fader. In Live when I move that fader the midi in does not light up although from the pcr 30 it reads the value correct on it's display. So I will be returning it tommorow and I hope I get a good unit this time, any body else experience this problem?

HOLD ON! There is a workaround to that problem. You just have to create a new program. It was in a post on here somewhere how to do it. I gotta run but I'll find it for you when you get back!!!

That rings a bell - I think it's something like the default program has the S2 disabled, and you have to select another configuration. I don't think you will need to return it.

It's NOT broken or diabled. The defalt configuration does not have S2 sending a MIDI Control Change message (the only type of message understood by Live) This is a blessing in disguise because now you have motivation to learn how to program each and every component of the PCR just the way you want to (or you can download the template from Edirol's website). If you go back to the first thread about the PCR, (I want to say it was in Feb.) there's a step by step.

I heard the PCR30 offer two midi ports, so you can select one in Reason and the other one for Live. can any user confirm this since it sounds exactly like I want the controller to be like ;-)
