"on the fly" session view looping

Post by reubenk » Sun Aug 02, 2015 2:57 pm

Hi guys
I am working on my live show at the moment, making the shift from Traktor DJing where everything seemed so simple. I am trying to make it a little more adjustable for me to be comfortable making the swap to ableton.
What I want to know is, if it is possible to loop on the fly view session view like you would in Ableton looping 8-16-32bars etc.
I know this can be made possible pre hand but I want to have the capability of doing it on the fly / spontaneously.

Many thanks in advance!

First I'd say, if all you are trying to do is recreate in Live what you are used to in Traktor, then you are setting yourself up for some frustration. They are different programs with different strength.

Second: depends on what you mean by looping.

Setting different loops length in an existing clip? Yes that's possible via changing the position and length of the loop brace within each clip. There are some solutions with external scripts and a Launchpad that give you that in a very accessible way. (you can of course do it with the mouse too)

If you mean more like a loop recorder, then Suite has the Looper device that lets you do this for loops up to 16 bars in length. You can also resample into a new clip on another audio track and loop from there, which has advantages, but is not a one button press affair.

If you have MaxforLive then exactly that is possible...

This also allows for Cue Points and Slicing as well...

No frustration necessary!

Hi Reubenk,

Currently you'd need to drop one per track you want to loop/slice etc., we're hoping for some further improvements to the Live API that would mean it could track a controllers Red Box focus for example...

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
If I load the plugin on every channel and map them all to the one button on my X1 would it work or would it cause problems? Is this a way to implement the idea? Or would it be too hard / CPU heavy ?

If you map them with one button, they'll all loop at the same time, if that's what you're after??

Yes precisely. as this will create the same effect as putting on master channel / looping all tracks at once right?
For example if I want to loop 4 bars before the breakdown ends on the fly.
Thanks!
