Need ideas for new Ableton Video tutorials! Anyone stuck?

Hi everyone!

My name is Brandon and I started BrokenOceanProductions... To save you from reading a long boring essay I'll cut to the chase..

I just started making Video tutorials on YouTube. Covering ABLETON and MASSIVE. Plus other stuff too but those are my main interests.

I am in the process of making a few series of 'How to make a song' and sound design using massive. BUT...

I want to know what you guys wanna see or learn. I see a lot of similar tutorial videos posted on YouTube and I wanna go above and beyond that and be the better and more helpful, so I need requests... I know I can search through this forum and see what you guyS are having problems with but. If you wanna see demos and get a visual answer to your questions let me know and I will add a video going over it to my channel!!!

I learn everything from watching videos whether it's a course from Macprovideo.com or WarpAcademy.com. I also watch every video on Dubspot's Youtube Channel and PointBlanks Youtube channel. I can search any specific thing I want to learn about Ableton in YouTubes Search bar. I respect the fact you want to help everyone and make videos, but there is so much free professional content available, I know where to get it. If I was you, I would go see which types of videos get the most views and that will easily tell you what type of videos to work on. I could never give you one specific type of video because everyday it changes. Last 4 days have been nothing but music theory, ear training etc. I wish you luck and will check out the videos you have posted online this weekend and give you candid feedback in a private message.

Yeah you are definitely right about that. I appreciate the feedback man... There is endless stuff on YouTube and obviously some stuff is left out but I guess my goal when I started videos was to just make videos but go more into detail and explain stuff no one ever did which is what im gonna do still just Cuz I enjoy doing it, and plus im trying to make a career doing music. I've been a drummer since I was 7 (now 22) and got into electronic music when I was 18, I play guitar etc.. Basically everything music is my life. I've been making dubstep for some years now and I recently started producing beats and my buddy released a single with my beat yesterday which is pretty exciting but... to keep it short im honestly trying to get noticed and gain followers etc Ya know? lol
Thanks you tho like I said I do appreciate it buddy and please do let me know what you think. Im not opposed to negative feedback either so if you think they are straight shit don't hold back, constructive critisism is good haha

You could read the whole live manual. It would be like a story time. You sit in a rocking chair and have some stuffed animals circled around you while you read the live manual out loud to them.
When you get to an important piece of info you could do a magical screen swipe which will transform you into the computer where you give examples.
Also, have guest. Have Mr. Bunny DJ, and Mr. Elephant DJ. There should be a villain and this would be Mr. Mouse Dj (Mr. Elephants Nemesis).

To the OP: Just a tip, don't start every single one of your videos with a 2 min introduction to who - and how awesome you are.
Chances are that these are the only 2 min I'll ever watch, after that you're burned.

Thanks for the input that def makes sense thinking about it, whenever I watch a video on YouTube and the intro is basically like mine I say fuck this and go on to the next video.. Like I mentioned before tho this is my first attempt at making videos. I thought Id try something new but as you can tell im not the best teacher lol... Just gotta be short sweet and to the point, no bs about who I am n shit

Maybe I should just stick to making beats and music n save the explaining for someone else lol

Honestly, teaching is difficult and teaching people you don't see (like in a video), even more so.

If you are just doing it for more name recognition, without having any talent for it or anything particular unique to teach, chances are you do more harm to your name than good. It's certainly no easy way to fame. Only very few managed to get recognized that way and they started a long time ago when youtube was not over saturated with that stuff yet and have some talent in it (i.e Tom Cosm etc.).

Focus on your beats. The chances are really not much better, but at least you spend your time with something you care about.

I esentially agree with what Tom is saying, but at the same time fuck that!

If you're passionate about moving forward in this direction then grab that passion by the horns. Life will happily throw you curve balls and rob you of goals you don't rob yourself of. So seize the momentum, but also proceed with caution. Absolutely work on making something unique or that you feel is better... just don't get so hung up on re-inventing the wheel that you miss your chance to re-invent the axle or something else that is closely related but grossly overlooked...

Take your time and keep striving.

I haven't looked at your videos yet, but I will. If you're not getting any ideas from yourself or anyone else... Then I'll throw out something and see if it sticks;

How do I make Live into a in-the-box looping rig with a 3 button foot pedal, a bass\guitar, and a mic? I want to quickly move between loops so that I can build up clips that I can test quickly against a drum track.
*I haven't searched for any tuts for this, but it's something I've been thinking about doing.
**stuffed animals and magical transitions are ok... as long as they're not too distracting

I really appreciate that uplift, the bottom line is that music is my passion, it's my life and whether im slowly improving my teaching skills Cuz there not great and creating tutorial videos or simply making music like I do everyday, I won't ever stop no matter what anyone says to be honest. I fucking enjoy doing it and it makes me happy.. Soo yeahh that's all I got, im not gonna go on and on its pointless haha but now about your question..

And just so we're on the same page..You want to use Live as a real-time looping station, using or actually mapping the buttons on your foot pedal to... Let's just say select/loop/record or whatever so that way when you're playing your guitar, which will be constantly being monitored along with your mic, you can try out different drum loops with ease?

I hope that all made sense the way I explained it, I think I have a good solution tho for you as long as we're on the same page here lol

I was thinking more along the lines of a fixed drum pattern and say record loop1, loop 2, loop 3, loop 15 and so on... By quickly being able to try a new (bass/guitar) idea. Then after recording (out of ideas), go back a decide which to keep and which to cut.

Having said that... You're idea of alternating the drums works too... It's just that this seems more straight forward and doesn't really require a looper. So, in that sense, it's not a looping tutorial if alternating drums is the focus. Or is it?... Because doing both would be better than my original thought.

Does that make sense?

I checked out a couple of your vids. Two quick pieces of advice:

1. Careful with the sniffles and throat clearing. This can be a distraction
2. No self praise. Good or bad, right or wrong this is not the purpose of helping others

Also, a search for BrokenOcean (I used a YouTube app on my tv) finds a band called Broken Ocean so this could create a situation as time goes on...

Thank you very much for the advice. Thinking about that second one now makes a lot of sense and I realize I tend to do that a lot which isn't good, but I will definitely keep that in mind and stick to the subject and "bulletpoints" and nothing more. As far as the sniffles... Im definitely sware of them and it pisses me off.. Cuz I try so hard to keep them quiet or non existent at all but whenever I think I recorded without them they are always there (I have sinus problems) lol but I kinda figured out a solution to minimize/ get rid of that entirely. AND I do have to possibly reconsider that name I did find that band on YouTube, but im going to look into a little more and think of another possible name to change to just incase... Id rather do it now before it's too late.

But now about your idea... one way to do it is you have your drum track playing consistently on let's say Track 1. Now you're gonna wanna set up a track for your guitar with the monitor set to "in" so you always hear it. Then you set up let's say 3 more tracks with the "audio from" your Guitar track. Then hold CTRL while arming each track so they record simultaneously. Then basically just map each pedal to each of those tracks? That would be one way to approach it I believe it should work. If that makes sense

i just don't know how it would work after you reach the 3rd track you might have to stop and select the next row unless when you hit pedal 1 to engage your first loop track it automatically records the next clip down in the column.

i'm not sure how it would work either, that's why a tutorial would be cool

seriously, there's more than one way to do it. with only 3 buttons on the foot pedal options are more limited, i recognize that, but i can't imagine this as being 100% hands free option if that is why you're stuck. IMO, using the space bar during recording is not necessarily restrictive.

it's the smooth transition from one take to the next while capturing all the prior takes, as separate recordings, that is elusive to me. i know i can make one long recording and go back and chop it up (because that's what i've been doing for years), but i find that workflow arduous and lame. reason being, i might record 8 vocal takes in a recording loop... i KNOW i nailed the second to the last (7th) one... so to work with that i have to drag the recording anywhere from a minimum of 112 to 224 bars down the time line just to find it. \
or... i hit ctrl/cmd Z and undo the last take which puts me at the 7th right? yes. but what if i want to check out the 2nd and 4th too? then it's a logistical pain in the ass.

some kind of single click next take/recording technique that is either automatic or easily activated, without stopping, that spits out each pass into it's own track and/or clip is the desirable outcome.

i know Live can capture the ideas, but for me... i end up stopping to fiddle or listen or whatever and i lose my mojo/momentum. that usually results in me hitting delete, rinse, repeat a few times, close Live, go to bed/Netflix/Xbox. when i have someone with me to record the takes and run the transport i get more desirable outcomes, but the last time i had a jam session with anyone was years ago at this point, which is a shame because i get better results that way. working alone isn't my preferred music making style. it leaves me as the only one to listen to myself and decide... and my default decision is "crap" -> delete.

the better solo work flow seems to be to listen after gathering more takes so i can go crap, crap, crap, crap, keep, crap, crap, crap, crap, keep, crap. now i have two keepers to work with, but finding them and extracting them from a giant recording is meh.

don't worry about it too much... i only asked about a looping tutorial because A. you seemed eager for suggestions, B. i've been pondering a way to do this for a while, C. you play guitar and keys so i assumed/hoped you might do something like this

How aboout several Loopers in a rack in different chains.
The ChainSelector selects the loopers and turns them on/off.
One button on your board switches between loopers (up to 128) via the ChainSelector and the others turn on recording/play back on all of them.

You just need to check how Loopers that are turned off react to being triggered for recording. If they don't then you are good to go.

You got me thinking now and im very curious to find a solution cuz I think that this is a great idea and has potential. Im leaving for work soon tho so give me some time and ill get back to you when i figure something out. If all goes well i will send you a link to the tutorial after i make it
