Yet for decades they were/are still rapping about how gangster they are.
Eazy E was the only gang banger in the group from what I recall. I think you and bitchy are missing the 'street reporter' part of what they did, even Eazy E wasn't for living the lifestyle he sang about, it's a first person narrative, not a confession in a holding cell. His comments after Tupac died were on those lines, that Tupac was trying to keep it 'street' when he had the opportunity to get away from that, and in a way that's what killed him. Dre started Death Row with Shug Knight, and you really cannot get more gangsta than Shug. He's currently looking at life for running over two of the movie crewmen, one of them died. Doesn't matter that Dre never was a banger if he's around Eazy, Shug, Tupac, and Snoop Dog. It's like calling a non made mafia member a faker... not a good idea.

I picked up NWA- Straight outa Compton and Ministry's- Land of Rape and Honey on the same day. Great year for aggressive electronic music! 8)

Electronic?! In what way are they "electronic", that not any other album since that time has been "electronic"?!

Electronic as a genre identifier seems like an ill fit for both of these albums.

Yeah, Tupac had to uphold that thug reputation he gained as a backup dancer for Digital Underground.

That was Tupac's problem, he was trying to be something he wasn't so bad that he kept taking it further and further...

NWA - keyboards, MPC, turntables
Ministry - samplers and synths

Sure, but if you look at it that way, then there are only two genres left: Electronic and not electronic music. At which point the classification gets pretty meaningless, since now Justin Bieber makes "electronic" music.

Paul McCartney used an electric bass :P

in their "genre" at that time, Ministry were far from your standard four man band... and NWA was pretty far removed from that too.

remember we're talking about the time (1988) where [typically] the biggest things going on in the music world (in the USA) were the band members hair... Guns N Roses were just releasing their 1st album. Poison, Motley Crue, Ratt, Cinderella, Megadeath, Metallica, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, even Aerosmith (and many more unnamed) all had a few things in common:

A. 4 or 5 man band consisting of singer (or singer/guitar player), bass player, drummer, lead guitar, and possible rhythm guitar
B. Keys (typically piano) were almost exclusively reserved for the ONE power ballad on the album
C. Long hair and leather pants
D. MTV fucking loved them
E. No samplers, synths, MPCs, turn tables, niggaz with attitude, or "big booty bitches" were found anywhere near them

Ministry were not them.
NWA were not them.

those two groups didn't fall under Whitney Houston, Taylor Dane, Rick Astley, or Michael Jackson's genres either, but they were definitely making electronic music that was outside the "band" and/or soulful singer norm at the time.

I still get a good chuckle thinking about when Axel Rose had NIN open for the Guns n Roses tour and NIN repeatedly got booed because “keyboards are for pussies!”

Take any album or tour performance by GnR and NIN and tell me which band is playing pussy music.

I'm at work with just the cell phone, but yes Tom Electronic music is the macro umbrella, edm, idm, ebm, house, dubstep, experimental, hip hop, industrial etc. ad nauseum are sub genres.

there Are far too many ways to break music down for us to ever agree on narrowing it down sufficiently.
Personally I go for basics like synth, vocal, guitar driven, or mood happy, aggressive, calm etc. I generally like aggressive music, so hardcore or rock sounding hip hop, punk, metal, industrial, heavy noise music all appeals to me.

Stringtapper would probably break it down by Jazz, Classical and Pop.

You probably have your own definition based on your thinking Land of Rape and Honey doesn't qualify as Electronic because of Ministry's later output.

In Tom’s defense if you went to the music store the year those albums came out you wouldn’t find them in an “electronic” section. NWA would be in rap and Ministry would probably be in rock or goth/industrial in a more hip establishment.

In everybody else’s defense MW said “aggressive electronic” music which isn’t a genre.

There, now everybody smoke this. :)

I had actually less of a problem with Ministry (in my mind Industrial/Metal - not that I really listen to them), but with NWA as electronic music. That's rap for me, what other genre distinction does it really need?!

Geeez...you forgot about Def Leppard, Warrant, Quiet Riot, Dokken, Trickster, Whitesnake, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Winger, Great White, and so on.....pretty exclusionary if you ask me. Pfffft.

You left out Ambient. Pretty exclusionary if you ask me. Was this willful and on purpose or an oversight as a result of posting via the said smart phone? In any event, Moby and Richard James would be pissed and I am too.
