Yes, this is how I think I prefer to work, but I've only done idea to session to arrangement so far. I think it's good if Session and Arrangement can cross-pollinate in both predictable and unpredictable ways.

Unfortunately there are a few obstacles in the way that you need to acknowledge and be aware of so you can work around them. It has taken me a couple of years to reach a level where I feel I can do what I want, more or less, in Live related matters.

Hmm, I would direct anyone who thinks Live's pathways to arranging are good enough to take a good look at Reason's Blocks, Bitwig's Metaclips, Cubases Arranger track, Studio One's Arranger Track, etc, etc.

These are modern tools to help people arrange.

But I'm sure these other DAW manufacturers must be wrong in creating a simple powerful way to move sections around and make alternate arrangements. To Ableton simpler is always better, and by that they mean "leave it out or remove it". But a lack of something is not inherrently good. Having no food is worse than a complicated recipe and unusual ingedients. Having no truck to move rocks is worse than having a big truck in which to move the rocks.

Lacking something is not the good kind of simplicity. It is the bad kind of simplicity.

Note again that Bitwigs version of this arrangement tool is called "MetaClips".

Well, yes I see what you mean though I feel we have a meal, we're just missing alternative choices on the menu. It can be positive to having to commit to the one given alternative. The flipside to that is that if you have to commit to it you might hesitate and drag instead of just doing it. Which can be overcome of course.

To me the biggest problem is the fact you have to handle copies of clips perhaps from Session, or from some places in Arrangement, that you might copy to other places. Which might be fine if you plan to work on every note and beat anyway and not if you would like to be able to have all copies change some detail at once in everyone of these. The only solution I know of for that problem is the commercial max device Alias Clips.

that's the way Logic handles it as well. And the beauty of it is that in order to re-arrange, all you have to to is click on the arrangement section that says 'Bridge' for instance and drag that somewhere else. Doing so will drag the whole segment of the song that is the Bridge (with all it's automation etc) to somewhere else. And all you had to do is drag that little 'Bridge' clip. You can also drag it onto another arrangement section and it will swop out the two sections so you can try alternate arrangements. This is ideal for doing actual arrangements imo.

This sounds very nice and is not something I remember from Logic (used to use 8). I'd like more flexibility in Arrangement. Though I feel productive in Live and have no issues with mixing down things, though arrangement probably needs a major overhaul as do the concepts of clips.
