do you have shared video memory on your laptop?

If so, I want to hear from you...
Does it really cause a problem?
I'm looking at a $500 premium to get non-shared video memory, and I really need to justify this. I know dedicated video memory is better but if I can make music and play sets on Live without dedicated video memory, then that's what I'd prefer.

thanks!

I have the fujitsu siemens a7640 with shared memory .. and its great for music and I've done a few gigs using live4 without any issues whatsoever....

edit: obviously if you can afford it .. get a machine with dedicated memory.

i was amazed to run the Live 5 Performance test flawlessly on my sister's $799 Compaq laptop with a Celeron-M 1.5ghz and shared memory.

i even cranked the reverb to first class and it seemed fine.

i wouldn't sweat it.
the money you save not getting the dedicated ram you can use to buy a GB of system memory, which would probably help you out more in the long run.

I've got a 256mb non-shared vid card in my lappy. It seems to make the meters look prettier than my last laptop. :)

Shared becomes a -big- issue if your video card shares an IRQ with your soundcard. Something to keep in mind.

BTW 500 for a non shared card seems like fricken highway robbery.

I have a IBM G40 with 64MB of shared mem and it is not a problem for me. At times when i am zoomiing in and out alot the visuals will studder or freeze or a second but it had never caused an audio glitch. I have 768MB ram in the puter in total.

shared sucks, but its not the end of the world. it was good advice to take the 500 bucks you saved and spend 200 of it on more ram anyway.
