Mixing Kick and Bass

When making room for the bass in the kick, cutting where the kick hits in the bass and boosting at that same spot on the kick and vise versa, how much would you recommend cutting and boosting in dbs? I understand that there's no right answer I'm just looking for some general guidelines.

Is this an eq or volume/gain question?

I would cut or boost as little as possible to achieve the desired results. Many people go way overboard here, often just a couple dBs is all you needed to adjust to get things to fit together better.
