compression vs normalisation - stupid question....

I can't get my head around the difference between normalisation and compression - is it the same thing? Can anyone explain in simple terms?

when you apply normalize you increase the overall level regarding to the highest peak in your clip, you dont control the dynamic range between your highest and lowest peek which is done by applying compression effect.
