Session extend midi clip length-duplicate/clone content

Post by version » Sat May 26, 2012 8:40 am

Seems to be a cumbersome, flow breaking, repetitive task of copying and pasting content to extend clip length in preparation for variations (doubling/quadrupling etc..).

The point of extending loop length is to enable variations. eg. drum fills and glitch edits

It'd be nice to stay in the session view and double the length of a drum beat - add a variation then double and add a fill at the end of the fourth bar. Not so important for house producers - but imagine you are Squarepusher?

Does anyone know a key command or technique to speed up the process?
Surely there should be a mode/setting to clone content as clip lengths are extended.

Should this be a feature request? Has this been requested already?

For longer length extensions there is a quicker way.
only 11 steps - that won't break your workflow will it
  1. select clip
  2. copy
  3. Change to arrangement
  4. select track
  5. paste clip
  6. drag to repeat 8 or 16 bars
  7. consolidate
  8. copy
  9. Change back to session
  10. select track
  11. paste

this is a silly request.. if you think about it..

for one it's the default behavior for the arrangement..
and that makes sense..

in session...if you want it to loop.. just loop it !
why auto-duplicate visually ? if you're gonna loop it anyways..?
I mean.. what for ?
also worth noting..
that the clip envelopes can be free (unlinked) from the loop anyways ..
allowing you variation.. as long as you want..
and automation is a function of the arrangement view anyways..

am I missing something ? what do you need this for ?

let me shorten that for you...
1.drag to arrangement
2.make it as big as you want
3.hit ctrl-j (consolidate)
4.drag back to session

I know all about follow actions - very fiddly and non visual - requires bar calculation and checking.

The point of extending loop length is to enable variations.

It'd be nice to stay in the session view and double the length of a drum beat - add a variation then double and add a fill at the end of the fourth bar. Not so important for house producers - but imagine you are Squarepusher?

Your drag between views method (although very mouse/trackpad dependent) is much quicker than the 11step key method - thanks.

I still think more ways to enable quick variation editing and duplication of content would be a powerful and useful addition to session view.

- why not add more useful options?

why not indeed ?
well..
if you're squarepusher.. you'd probably not let that hold you back ... hehe..
he'd make it work..
if you want to add variation you can still duplicate clips and use follow actions..
it simply works.. and allows you a lot of flexibility in (current release) live..
if you don't like it visually then.. what can I say..

I actually like this idea a lot, it is one of the features built into Mark Egloff's step sequencer, and it is REAL NICE for drum sequencing.

I guess another solution would be to go into your clip view in session,
command+a copy all
command d duplicate
extend loop length.

Thing is, if you dont have something ticked at the very end of the loop, it will offset the duplication the amount which the last note resides till the end.

It's rather incredible that Live doesn't have a way to predefine default clip length or the ability to quickly double/extend clip length. Yet another reason I appreciate the elegance of Maschine's sequencer that much more.

This is so true. Ableton 10, perhaps?

- turn on loop mode
- set the loop end to whatever you need, this seems to add time
- reset your end point

If add time by clicking and dragging and you go further than you wanted and reverse back to the desired value the 'extra' time is still rendered on the display; it appears to fix itself zooming in and back out.

After adding time simply select the original material and duplicate.

:D

I totally need this. I own ableton 10, any news for this matter?

My ideal process for creating music is in session view, start with a clip/loop and add loops in different tracks as I have the ideas.

So if a violin sounds in my head I’d love to quickly create new track with standard violin sound and be able to try/rec in a clip with a predifined length, and if I want to add variations I just increase the lengh WITH A COMMAND OR MIDI SIGNAL (not mouse braking the creative flow).

Just as you do in a hardware drum sequencer, where you can have a button to increase beats or signature of the pattern
