Can Push1 and Push 2 coexist in same setup?

Post by EasyWorkflow » Wed Nov 11, 2015 1:23 am

With new Push 2, I can't help but think that keeping the Push 1 still makes sense even with the $254 rebate from Ableton. I liked the deal because it was optional, price was fair and that Ableton had cool vibes and was donating all the Push controllers loaded with Ableton to inner city schools.

Are most of you or some of you in any type of agreement that the Push 1 can coexist with Push 2 and somehow be used effectively together in a live setting? My thoughts are having Push 1 setup as a dedicated drum machine during a set live gig so anyone can bang away at some drums?

Would you buy a new Push 1 in perfect condition for $125 if you had Push 2?

Does it make sense to keep old unit? I still love it even though the new model has so many new features.

You can use both, but unless you do custom midi mapping, most of the controls will be identical on both units. They really aren't intended to be used this way out of the box, but if you were inclined to dive into M4L and other tools, you could probably make it work.

One idea would be to look into using PXT General on the Push 1. Still would involve setting up the controls.

Ableton should of course make it possible to use several Push, but I don't think that's a priority.
Make some music!

I just got new Push 2, and still a bit confused. I am also still a brand spanken newbie that still knows so little it's sad but having a blast and managed to make a a track. I have zero MIDI background DAW background, but had a home analog studio recording studio and I have been playing guitar for 38 years so I have a feel, grove &vibe for music and an a good ear and theory to help out.

But Back to Push 1. If you were playing live and using Push 1 with a separate laptop running unique version of Ableton into PA,, wouldn't that alone make it a cool instrument dedicated just for the instrument side of Push? The Push 2 controlling second laptop with second instance of Ableton takes care of the nerve center. So is is worth to hold on to Push 1 or accept the fact it may become a relict and spend the majority of time learning focusing on Push 2 unit.

Is it worth having two of the same model of car in your driveway if they are only a few years apart.... but there is only one driver in the household?

Good call, although if i had lost my house due to not paying the mortgage i might be grateful for the second car for the kids to sleep in...

I jumped in and ordered Push 2 in a music store nearby. They had a 11% rebate yesterday so it was a good deal... I'm still unsure to keep Push 1 or to sell it later.
I'm considering using it with Push 2 for live gigs, as a dedicated drum sequencer, as a monone emulator or locking it to a specific track.

Some things that could work (i don't have Push 2 yet so i can't test it...) :

Pxt (clip play mode)

Pxt live Plus (user mode or drum mode)

Monome emulation

https://github.com/aumhaa/monomodular (no update since 2014 and no news from the developper on his blog)

Arcade Series

eb Scrubber (chop audio tracks mlr style)

Time and Timbre

On separate computers they'll each work fine.

Just know that if you use both on the same computer and expect them to operate on unique channels, that's the primary speed bump.

Beyond that, I do not know what does and doesn't work independently function-wise.

ONE CPU/Win7
I called the Support. The Girls there are the opinion 2 x different Push(1+2) and 2 x Live Instances would cause trouble, because both will take information from the same preference file. I got this working with an APC40 - Instance 2`s preferences are changed just temporary while Instance1 keeps the settings. Now i can just imagine that the pushbase-folder will cause
trouble. Maybe any UpGRADEer could kindly try with an WIN PC which allow 2 instances to connect 2 different Pushversions and map them into the different Instances by deactivating the counterpart in the midi-preference. THX

If you have a 67 Camero & 69 Camero, answer is yes, one driver and model is two years apart. Why would you answer a question with a question. I obviously do not know if it pays to have Push setup as a dedicated controller for live rigs using a second instance of Ableton. Some other folks are trying to figure out the same thing as me and I am a beginner. But if your point was to say no way in a nice way, then maybe I understand your response.

I have used Push 1 and push 2 together. It was very cool to enhance the 64 pads to 128 like the Linnstrument, or to play two synths simultaneously, and see the equal pads blinking on the other push for better orientation. It was very cool to use 16 macro knobs for one VST synth, or for an instrument rack and fx rack, or to modulate / tweak two VST synths simultaneously.
Also I was able to enhance the sequencer to 16 steps.
I was very excited to use push2 and push3 together. So I was writing to Ableton and they told me that they can’t work together but they will try to work on an solution. Push1 and push3 could work together, but there are some bugs, where the will also work on. I am really happy, that there is hope that both controllers can work together in future updates.
Two push3 controllers or push2 with Push3 is a very advanced upgrade, especially if you play notes like the Linnstrument or a guitar, with notes out of the scale.
