copying Scenes from one Ableton Set to Another, broken?
copying Scenes from one Ableton Set to Another, broken?
my problem is, i work in Scenes (and lots of them) and i need to copy a group of,
let's say, 100 (named) Ableton Scenes from a Project (A) for a sound design for a play into another Project (B) that already has work in it from other rehearsals..
i USED to be able to copy/paste a group of scenes from one project to another but this appears to have ceased being an option in Live 9.5.
i've also tried dragging a large group of Scenes into the Browser and then dragging the Browser folder back into the other Project Set and THIS used to work as well,
copying all the scenes (sound cues) into a new position in the Master list and adding new Tracks as needed in the operation.
but NOW (9.5 at least) Live will not let me paste a cluster of Scenes with their names and any additional work i'd done on the Clips..
of course it would be GREAT if i could just run two Sets side by side and drag what i needed from one to the other, but Live has never let one use this method.
apparently the other methods have disappeared causing me to lose A LOT of crucial work!
am i going nuts that Live 9.5 (or some recent version) has broken copying Scenes (along with their tracks) into another, already started Set?
thank you!

Re: copying Scenes from one Ableton Set to Another, broken?
my latest theory is that i got caught between Operator/Compressor upgrades between versions.
i went through and upgraded all my instances of Operator/Compressor/Simpler in both sets.
made two attempts to copy/paste and drag/drop. no luck yet.....

I would be very interested in an answer...

in your current set, navigate to your older set in the browser, open its folder and drag in the tracks to your current set. you may have to add the old set as a destination in the browser first, but once its there, you can just drag all parts into the current set.
Re: copying Scenes from one Ableton Set to Another, broken?
garyboozy, this only works for certain sets in my project folder.
for example,"GP workshop 6" and "GP workshop 6b" will drag into the master list of "GP workshop 7a". BUT where the series of scenes i need resides is in "GP workshop 6c".
and THAT one will load for a drag, but present a circle with a line crossed through it icon
instead of the inviting and effective rectangular 'file' icon.. that will actually drop.
i tried going through each track, i had added a couple of extra tracks in "6c", and
copying the tracks that didn't exist in "7a" INTO "7a" ... but no dice.
i still get the crossed circle icon.
it used to be that Live would just add tracks that it didn't see into the new destination..
not to mention my all-important scenes and scene names..
i'm not sure that differing tracks are even the issue.
i AM exasperated that it refuses to load .
UPDATE, retesting sets that were loading such as "6" and "6b" now WILL NOT load.
hmm.

the 'nope' icon only appears here when i try to drag an .als file into session view when the orig file doesn't have any session clips, only arrange clips.
you can drag these .als files into arrange view, though - where they can then be selected and dragged into session (click-hold, press tab), or just right-click > consolidate to new scene.

Re: copying Scenes from one Ableton Set to Another, broken?
i worked around the issue because i was able to copy my Scenes from v7 into the LiveBrowser,
then counterintuitively drag the new scenes into the OLD v6, then save a v8 from that..
(i couldn't drag from v6 to v7 to save a v8, but i guess backwards worked!)
i'm still unsure of what was going on to disallow the more straight forward methods.
it may have had something esoteric to to with the recent update to Live9.5, and the
inconsistency between sometimes being allowed to drag scenes between Set versions
and not was really muddying the waters..
still.. Live is amazing!
(wish i could load two sets side by side for logistical purposes!)

(thanks for the responses, Gary!
i use Live a bit unconventionally for theater, where there are hundreds of sequential scenes,
so music production and performance peeps kind of look at me funny. such a wide open program usually though!)

I was having this same problem but it seems to be working fine now
