What the EFF ! Stutter Edit (Ableton Bug??))

Post by sana48 » Sat Dec 05, 2015 3:04 am

Greetings All,

Abelton 9.5 64- bit , Windows 7

I route the Stutter Edit VST as instructed ( PLace SE on audio track, insert midi track, route output of midi to SE audio track (midi tracks now says Stutter Edit), set midi monitor to in) in a new project and it works. But no matter what I do it will not work on a saved project. On the new project that I get it to work on- it will not work if I try to set it up a second time with new tracks. On my saved project (The one I bought SE for) the midi track will not find Stutter Edit in the audio track..

Contacted Izotope Support, here is their response:

Thank you for reaching out! Sorry you are having difficulties here. Currently there are no known issues with Stutter Edit and Ableton Live 9.5. I included a .PDF of the step by step setup. Please make sure you are following this closely as the setup can definitely be confusing. If you are still having issues it may be attributed to a routing issue in Ableton Live. If that is the case Ableton support may help you understand why you are having difficulties routing your MIDI output to an Audio Track.
Another step you may take is try the Stutter Edit setup in a 32-bit Live environment to see if it works there.

Anyway, I follow the pdf and like I said I get it to work fine on a new track but it wont work on anything else, nothing I do gives me control of the VST.

I dont know if there is some hidden setting I am missing, about midi and audio routing in a saved track ... or what?

Help!

So it works at first, but then it always breaks after saving, and nothing works when new instances are created?

Would you happen to have images of two instances in one set that you can show us? Preferably the images in Session view and showing track routing.

I don't use it regularly as it's on my music partners machine, but I have never failed to set it up. Most likely you're misunderstanding routing in Live. I do recommend the manual as it's a real eye-opener on routings. Live is more intricate and powerful than what first meets the eye.

Definitely seems like a bug!

Also, I don't think it is necessary to select 'In' as opposed to 'Auto' for the monitoring since you are already arming the track, and because you are probably intending to playback the edits from clips.

It's odd that the box for selecting the stutter edit device under the channel select does not seem 'active' to either dragging of as a dropdown. Have you also tried re-clicking the channel select after you've selected the channel to see if it shows more options?

Also, have you tried hitting tab and doing the routing in session view instead?

Those are just last-ditch possibilities for maybe getting something going, since I'm sure that whether or not they figure the bug out, you probably want to be able to use it as soon as possible...

...but from your demonstration it is Clearly a bug and ought to operate as you are expecting it to work.

I'd try to send a link to both Ableton and iZotope.

Yes, I have tried both- routing in session view and attacking that little square selector box... to my wits end with no success.

Lol.. I want it to work .... sigh

I don't have Stutter Edit or live on hand to test, but it appears that when you recreate the audio track at the 2 minute mark in your video, you have an EQ8 first in the device chain... Is this having an effect?

That was my first suspicion actually, I tried erasing the EQ8 right away with no luck;)

Thanks

Wow... just tried this... I can't route midi to SE at all. It's just not found in the MIDI TO drop down. This use to work in earlier version of 9. Super disappointed about this.

I just got it to work. Closed out the old saved project and restarted my system. Opened live, created an Audio track and dropped SE onto the track. Create a new MIDI track, set monitor to in and select the track with SE. Test to make sure SE works. Success. Next, open a saved project drop SE onto the track that needs effect. Add a new MIDI track with same settings as above. Success. Not sure why it wasn't working early but I did have a custom MIDI track configured for new tracks. I reset that back to default, maybe that was the fix. Are you using a custome MIDI track? Have you tried resetting your default MIDI track?

I think I am also using a custom midi track. This sounds hopeful. I will reset midi to default and see if that works when I get off work later!

Liko! You are a genius !! That is a great workaround. I owe you brother! Worked like a charm. But all i did was open a new live set and save the empty midi track provided as my new default midi track.

Now humor me this... shouldn't we still be able to connect "custom" midi tracks to devices on audio tracks?

I am still considering this a bug, no?

Unless I am missing something shouldn't I still file a support ticket and make Ableton aware of this issue?

Unless this "custom" MIDI track is doing something that is incompatible with StutterEdit then this is indeed a bug. When I tried the demo last year or so I had a custom template MIDI track and I didn't have these issues. Could be a new thing. Certainly worth reporting.

Are you reporting to iZotope or Ableton? I'm working on a new project and am seeing the problem again. Maybe I should report as well?

edit: I went ahead and reported this to both iZotope and Ableton.

edit edit: Just tested this against illformed Glitch2 and NI The Finger and there is no issue routing MIDI to either plugins.
