Recording loops from soft synths in Ableton Live

Hi,

I'm currently setting my basic Ableton template and always have a recording track that I use to record loops I make using soft synths on separate channels.

I'd like to know how you record your loops or phrases. Do you add effects and or limiter before recording or do you use effects after it's been recorded.
