no audio in with motu 828mkii?

Post by psherburne » Mon Sep 05, 2005 8:29 pm

This is probably entirely due to a very simple/stupid error I'm making, but if anyone can help..

I've recently purchased a MOTU 828MKii, which I'm currently using to connect my PowerBook with a MachineDrum and self-powered speakers; and for some reason I'm not getting audio running back into AbletonLive, despite having set up my Audio System Preferences correctly, and my Live MIDI/Audio preferences correctly. So although I can write a MIDI clip to control the MachineDrum, and it plays fine through the MOTU/speakers, when I attempt to record the audio in Live, I get nothing, no input signal whatsoever.

Am I screwing up something in the MOTU preferences? Is there a bug? Thanks in advance for any tips...

Philip

Create an audio channel and choose the audio input pair that you want on the motu. But be careful- Analog 1+2 aren't Live inputs 1+2, so you may have to try a bunch of different inputs that are available till you stumble upon the right one.

Thanks for the tip. I just converted from an M-Audio Audiophile, so the MOTU environment is a little overwhelming for me. I'd assumed that I could just set the audio track in Live to "external in," as with the M-Audio, and all would be fine, but I'm still not getting any results. Is this something I need to set in Audiodesk?

Thanks again -
Philip

Enable all the inputs in Live's preferences and play your sequence. As you browse the pull-down menu to select your input (underneath External In) you should see level in whichever input is receiving your signal.

On my setup, the 2 mic/line inputs are 1/2, analog ins 1-8 are Live ins 3-10, if i remember right.

you can use audiodesk to monitor the input from the external device...it won't be processed by live plugins though. no latency either...

or...

if you check the motu manual, there is a chart explaining the naming conventions for the motu input and outputs...if you want to enable the Live inputs you have the external audio device connected to you'll have to figure out which inputs you are using.

i think 1 and 2 are the front mics...3 to 10 are the other analog ins.

the motu is pretty easy once you get around the inputs/outputs naming convention...audiodesk is really handy too, especually for routing audio to external gear...good luck

Thanks for your replies - I was confused by having made the jump from the M-Audio to the MOTU, but now everything makes sense. You're right, the MOTU labeling is confusing but a little trial and error got me sorted. Mic inputs are 1+2, and then the audio ins on the back are 3-10.

cheers!
