Eventide H8000FW use with Ableton Live 8

Post by jhstark » Thu Dec 24, 2015 8:06 pm

I have been using my new H8000FW with Ableton Live 8. I have been successful with most all functions except one - I am unable to record H8000FW processed audio into a track/clip. I have all 8 channels available to/from the H8000FW over FW1. I also have a MIDI IN/OUT pair active for manipulating the H8000FW routing with Eventide's utility, which I have done in real time and can view and understand the results. I also use the H8000FW as my 'sound card', and can monitor the stereo analog out from channels 1&2 from the H8000FW. I have tried using SENDS and also directing the audio out directly from the track to H8000FW. As I stated, although I can monitor the processed audio, the recorded audio is always dry. I have seen a few others with this issue, but never found any resolution. Since this has to do with HW/SW integration, it is difficult to get the needed support without 'finger pointing'. Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Hi

Not sure if I recall properly and may be wrong.

When you are tapping the H8000 outputs in Live via the software driver...are you directly attempting to record straight to the channel/track you are monitoring the input on? If so try the following.Try using resample and or set up another audio track and tap the channel input your H8000 inputs are being monitored on and record a clip...see if you get the FX.

Thanks for reply. I was not having any luck using the SEND/RCV, so like you mentioned, I created a new audio track with input defined as EXT IN from the H8000 (with the source track defined as output external to H8000). That finally did result in ability to record processed track. This approach should work fine, although in some cases using the SEND/RCV approach would be preferable. I suspect if I study the I/O chapter I can figure out how to control the SEND/RCV to Ext also.
Thanks again....

Hi..great!...at least you can go wild with layering up and mixing Fx from the venerable HBomb...that thing has gods work embued in it

I also should have been a bit clearer just for clarification:
Try using resample and or set up another audio track and tap the channel input your H8000 inputs are being monitored on
I should have said tap the "track" itself from your new audio track from where your monitoring the H8000 input on.The first time this happened to me was with other audio drivers with built in FX on sound cards and noticed the same problem that I could monitor the effected track no problem but it recorded dry....I think this is also something to do with the DAWs design, I suspect that the audio stream is being processed but the FX are for want of a better or wrong explanation something to do with post/pre in the way the driver/H8000/DAW works/is setup...I'm sure the Abes or another who knows more of exactly whats going on could explain it correctly/better.The main thing is that you can at least use it..I never bothered looking into it much more since I had what I needed but would also be curious to find out exactly whats going on in these scenarios myself....I vaguely recall reading about what was going on with this somewhere but can't remember.

I'm using an RME Fireface 802 and there is a setting that switches the DSP processing in total mix in a manner so that its directly recorded. So I suspect this is something similar. I have H8000FW with the superb internal digital mixer with no limit/restriction route anything anywhere but at the moment set up over ADAT with the 8AB routing with the RME but at the moment I'm not using it as a sound card smultaneously, one of my setups/routings is to send to all 1-8 I/O (internal DSPs) as 4 stereo pairs (the DSPs don't all have the inputs being used but 1&2 to DSP A and 5&6 to DSP B) and return the same using send and return with live external audio utility used on the sends and returns and it works as expected.Indeed just keep an eye on the I/O pre/post/track/direct input/monitoring/tapping /routing etc with Live/H8000, I'm pretty sure that it can be done and the sends/returns can/should work in your configuration.

Anyway all the best
