Drum Tools 02 vs 01
Drum Tools 02 vs 01
Sorry if this has already been discussed but...after doing some thorough reading about the vengeance packs, Wave Alchemy, etc, it seems like more people like Drum Tools (whether it be 01 or 02) for a really good sample pack of percussion with good acoustic as well as synthesized samples (I'm really not trying to discuss sampling vs. synthesizing a kick, please, I'm not expecting to become the next great Swedish synthesizing producer lol)...my question is, it looks like WA just released Drum Tools 02, seems like it's a larger library than 01 (though 01 has more reviews)...anybody have any experience with them both? and which one a beginner producer would get the most use out of? I'm leaning 02 currently, just wondered if you guys have any thoughts
Re: Drum Tools 02 vs 01
Hi there!
Nice to see your question, as i did demotracks for both of em.
Both packs are pretty different, actually:
Drum tools 1 offers for example (additionally to all drum samples) a variety of synth sounds (stabs and drones), which are pretty nice. Must admit i was kind a dissapointed when drum tools 2 didn´t had some synth sounds in it as well (it´s "drums" only).
Samples from Drum Tools 1 is still something, i often use or browse through and i own LOTS of sample packs (also Stuff from Goldbaby) and nearly all packs from Wave Alchemy. What i mean is, the samples are (even if the pack is older) top notch.
What makes Drum Tools 2 special (for me) is the that it offers all samples with Tape as well as "special processed", so you can choose on a sample, if you prefer it with "tape" sound or not, so lot´s of options to choose from.
Also what makes Drum Tools 2 distinctive from Drum Tools 1 is, that it comes with drum sounds which can be very well used for Dubstep or Hard Techno/ Electronic stuff. I think that "back in the time" from Drum tools 1 these kind of sounds wheren´t that common, that´s why there are less of these sounds in Drum tools 1. For my demo track for Drum Tools 2 i mainly focused on those "harder" sounds, but let me assure you that there are lots of "normal" sounds in that pack as well.
Must admit, i couldn´t say which one i´d choose if i had to, maybe it depends on what sounds you think you could use more.
Hope that helped somehow...
One last thing:
my demotrack for Drum Tools 1 is the second one
my demotrack for Drum Tools 2 is the one called "mr.adl"

Re: Drum Tools 02 vs 01
I just downloaded the Freebie version of Drum Tools 02 a couple days ago, and was really impressed with the quality of the samples. The kicks in particular were very nice -- nothing shocking or new, just very well constructed and executed dance kicks, balanced just right, e.g. not too boomy or overcompressed like much of the stuff online. I already built some kits in Live out of the free pack, which needless to say is tempting me greatly to pick up the full thing.

Then get the free ones for drum tool 1 as well!
In fact: get all the free stuff from em.
Wave Alchemy also has some sales every now and then, like 20% off all packs. Go and like their facebook page, they post coupens from time to time, where you can get up to 25% off the regular price.

Re: Drum Tools 02 vs 01
thank you! I think I'm gonna go with 02 for now...I know, "everyone does EDM blah blah blah" but whatever, I like those types of kicks it's just my taste (that perfect balance of all 3 elements, that's what I like most about "modern" kicks)...regardless of what I go with, I'm sure as a noob I'll be blown away by the quality, considering I've already built decent ones with just Live's stock library (though there are a lot that I don't feel like I'd ever use, transients included)...thanks for the input guys!mr.adl wrote:Hi there!

EDIT: just bought 02...here's the biggest thing all of these kicks have that stock samples/other ones seem to miss...PUNCH...even the "non-punchy" ones have that air mid-section that I just was struggling so hard to find...only have gotten through just a taste but my god, SO much better than anything I've heard
Re: Drum Tools 02 vs 01
You couldn´t go wrong with ANY of those, but congrats to your purchase and enjoy those delicious samples.mwlad17 wrote:thank you! Re: Drum Tools 02 vs 01
Seriously I can't get over the quality of them...they practically don't even need layered, just gentle EQ'ing (to let other parts tickle through) and light compression, the punch, seriously, can't stress that enough...$72 well spent for sure

Gonna through this in before beatsme has time to post....
you tried splice.com, mate? Huge sample library - pulls from tons of different sample collections. Monthly subscription, 100 downloads a month, you can demo all samples before you download. I've found some glorious kicks there!

That's cool but I'm saying this pack is awesome! I can't recommend it enoughShift Gorden wrote:Gonna through this in before beatsme has time to post....

Edit: I'm nowhere near as experienced as anyone on here, but these samples have to be already layered/compressed/EQ'ed and I SWEAR I've heard them in many modern songs
Re: Drum Tools 02 vs 01
just out of curiosity... how/where did you guys save them for use in Live?
i haven't really thought about file management for a while... since before Live 9 browser. just wondering if i'm missing out on a better way.

Re: Drum Tools 02 vs 01
Since I don't have an insane number of sample packs mine is just in my "user library"...they already separated it into folders like "punchy" "machine" etc

Re: Drum Tools 02 vs 01
Any indications whether this is a "raw" sound library with sounds that can be moulded into something else, almost anything else, or if it's a library of glorious ready-made samples you can use as is and doesn't lend itself necessarily to further developments? I certainly prefer the former.
Make some music!
Re: Drum Tools 02 vs 01
Honestly I'd say both...I've layered a few together to get some interesting sounds, but there are also some really solid pure samples that are "ready to use"...I mean even the most perfect sample, of anything really...aren't we all processing it a little?Stromkraft wrote:Any indications whether this is a "raw" sound library with sounds that can be moulded into something else, almost anything else, or if it's a library of glorious ready-made samples you can use as is and doesn't lend itself necessarily to further developments?
