From Reaper to Ableton Live

Post by HesitationMarksjagged » Wed Feb 10, 2016 1:40 pm

Hi, i'm new to the Ableton live workflown. I'm coming from Reaper and i'm used to that workflown.. i've tryied Live for a couple of days and i like it very much. I like to compose different genre of music: i do a lot of industrial (a la Nine inch nails), scoring music, new wave and so on.. is it possible to do stuff like that in Ableton like when i was using reaper with a "traditional" type of workflow for ex: playing a melody with strings (i use omnisphere) then on another track maybe with a synth some drone kind of stuff for the bottom-end etc without using loops? i saw that a lot of people use Live to compose Dance, EDM and stuff like that using lots of loops but no "playied" parts.. So i would like to know if i can work in the Live way and also in the more "traditional" way of composing without using hundreds of different DAW but just Ableton Live.

Big Trent fan and retired Goth here. :)

You can do anything in Live you can do in any other DAW, with all DAWs having their strengths and weaknesses. Session view throws a lot of new users off. Hit tab to be in arrangement view and it’s essentially like every other DAW.

I recommend going through the built-in tutorials to get a better grasp of things.

Thanks for the tips :) i really like all aspects of Ableton Live, i find really inspiring and thats a great thing for someone who want to compose something :)
another question, i was listening an interview with Charlie Clouser (former NIN keyboard) and he used to do lots of remixes for Rob Zombie and other artists, i've always been interested in doing remixes to some Gary Numan songs from the late 90s but don't know how to start working on them. i know tons of people do remix in Live, how do you approach to remix of existing tracks?

Look up some youtube tutorials on warping in Live. Once you get that concept down it’s just a matter of dragging a track in and chop editing it up to remix. A lot of electronic tracks should just auto warp without much adjustments needed by you since they were produced by a sequencer or computer in the first place.
