recording problems in Live 1.5.2 and 2.0.2 under OS X

You're right on your assumption Ben, the problem lies in OSX itself, not neccesarily the application you're using. 10.2.3 was supposed to fix this issue. Apple addresses only 11 & 22 khz recording, 44.1 is a pain in my ass on occasion tho as well.

You hear pops and clicks when you play audio recorded through a USB device at 11 KHz or 22 KHz.

Solution

If possible, record the audio at a different sample rate, such as 44.1 KHz or 48 KHz.

Alternatively, you may record audio through the computer's sound input port, if it has one.

Getting any DAW software to properly work with my US-428 and SoundSticks has been a nightmare. I haven't been able to get any sort of confirmation from Apple (who wrote the SoundSticks driver, not Harman-Kardon) if the SoundSticks are even CoreAudio compatible.

In any case, in the Discussions over at info.apple.com there is a long list of grievances from people using US-428s, US-224s and Edirol USB interfaces, and similar ones at Tascam's online forums. We are not alone.

The blame game just keeps circling around - is it the hardware manufacturer? Is it 3rd party drivers? Is it Apple's fault? Is it the software developers' fault?

My only option at the moment is to keep my US-428 as a MIDI interface and remote controller and get a MOTU 828, *and* separate powered monitors. Or trade in for Tascam's new FireWire unit (IF it works).

Or hope that 10.3 really fixes this problem once and for all!

does anyone has the distortion-problems using the build-in input (at a g4 powerbook v2)??? or with a rme or any firewire-unit??? i did not have ableton, but recording with spark and the build-in audio under osX (any version) was just fine.

okay, this is getting weird. I have the same problem like everyone posting here: crackling sound after a while of recording - not exactly reproducable, but it happens all the time (on my iBook 700, 384MB, 10.2.6, iMic, Live 2.0.3). So I did some testing with other recording software on the same input at the same time. Result:

Live, Spark ME and even Griffins (the manufacturer of the iMic) Final Vinyl have the same problem, but a tiny application called "Audio Recorder" by Ben Shanfelder had no problems at all! Very strange.

I love Abletons User Interface and concept of using it (both in arranging and jamming view). And it does everything I want (except for this recording thing......). So for now, I am using Audio Recorder to record my guitar with background coming from Live. For every take scrumming the strings in time (like on every beat), makes it easier to position the recorded guitar in Live Arrangement later. Not the easiest way, but it works for now....

oh, i forgot to mention that this happens recording to my internal HD as well as to my 80GB Firewire IBM Deskstar 7200rpm HD. During my test with several Recording Apps, I only had one small loop in playback, CPU-Usage was around 8% (no effects at all, recording input was set to mono via Audio MIDI Setup, so Live and the other Software had only MonoInput, it happens with Stereo also... ).

I have not done much recording with the internal Microphone, but have never experienced any problems with that.
