Need some 'yes' 'no' answers please for newish Push2 user

Post by 4T » Wed Mar 02, 2016 12:33 am

Are the following possible? To my (limited) knowledge, they are not.

1> Pre-Count/preroll to record only works on new clips
(Sometimes I want a count in even on existing clips when about to overdub)

2> Show bars/beat counter on Push 2 display
(i dont use step & am always in 64 pad mode. this means i have to look at the software just to see where in a 4 bar loop i am)

3> Cannot round off bpms to nearest tenth from hardware ie make 95.97 to 96.00
(after tap tempo, I'm trying to round up/down)

4> not sure if this is a bug or not but I can't keep the midi key editor open on my right screen (of my dual display setup) I can shift-tab to move it from the left screen to the right but the moment I hit record, it goes back to the left screen. Anyone else experience this?

5>Cannot open VST gui from Push 2 hardware

6>Cant save (ctrl+s) from Push hardware

7>When editing samples, Push2 never retains the last view and always resets itself ie if I want to quickly crop a bunch of samples, I have to bring up crop each & every time per sample rather than it staying in crop mode.

Advanced thanks

For #3 I think you can hold Shift to fine-tune.

Using shift does so in .10 increments only.

This can be done by setting the Quantization Menu (the thing directly to the right of the metronome on/off button on the top left of your main screen) to X amount of bars, depending on how much of a count you need. The default setting of 1 bar gives anything less than 4 beats to prepare, depending on when you arm/trigger your new empty clip to be recorded. Try changing it to 2 bars, that will allow you to select the blank clip and will count at least less than 8 beats before it begins recording your new clip.

Not sure what you mean but it seems like you should know where youre at by listening. Unless youre doing some 32 or 64 bar progression, it should be audibly apparent where you are. Apologies if misunderstanding your work flow, just unsure what you want or how it would help.

3> Cannot round off bpms to nearest tenth from hardware ie make 95.97 to 96.00

Stated above- tenths place for [SHIFT] key adjustments. Best advice is to just deal with it and readjust/round your tempo using the mouse and keyboard before saving or exporting. While making a track, its kinda just an OCD thing to want a whole number for the bpm. I am not blaming you, I do it too!

IDK, dont do dual screen

5>Cannot open VST gui from Push 2 hardware
No dedicated button in Push 2 but kind of a workaround: Play with Auto Open and Auto Hide settings on the bottom of the Look/Feel tab of the settings menu.

6>Cant save (ctrl+s) from Push hardware
True

7>When editing samples, Push2 never retains the last view and always resets itself ie if I want to quickly crop a bunch of samples, I have to bring up crop each & every time per sample rather than it staying in crop mode.
On a clip or in a simpler? That kinda work sounds like it would just be easier with the mouse anyways. I might be misunderstanding, though.

@JZ Chicago

Thanks for your reply

1> Slight misunderstanding I think... I can't get the precount to work on Push 2 for an existing clip. It's fine for new clips but say I want to overdub an existing drum clip with added fills etc, I can't get a pre-count prior to recording, it just starts from bar one when I hit record (unless I've misunderstood your answer;)

2>The Bar/beat counter that you tend to see on the majority (if not all) hardware sequencers. I tend to work in 4 to 8 bar loops and sometimes if I'm programming a part that is bare bones, it's hard to tell at which bar Im at sometimes unless (like you say) a part has distinctive sections. For eg, if I rec a 8 bar loop, I end up programming a part meant for bar 1 at bar 5. I can look over at the software but Id rather focus on the hardware. It's a small thing I know but seeing how the clip view (on Push2) displays not much info, I'm sure they could add it in here.

5>Because I have auto hide OFF, your suggestion isnt possible. I need auto hide off so I can 'PIN' certain plug-ins. Just a bit of a pain if I want to open a VST instrument GUI like Massive, it's back over to that mouse....

7> Within Simpler (Drum Rack). Here's an example.. yesterday I was adjusting the tuning for sounds within a drum rack: First, on Push2, I open the Simpler (deep) edit mode and then enter the Global tab where the tuning control is to make my adjustment. I then choose another pad to tune but rather than the tuning control be there for me to adjust, I'm brought back out of Simplers Global Edit tab AND Simplers deep edit mode. Means I have to do repetitive menu/tab hopping just to adjust the same things on a bunch of pads. I can't use the select multiple (shift clicking via software) workflow from Ableton as things like crop or individual tuning need per sample editing. Hope that made sense.

4T - I hear ya. I hope someone else with a similar work flow as you can chime in. Sounds like you know exactly what you need.

Best of luck finding the best solution/work around!
