live looping??

Post by jeffthedrummer » Fri Apr 08, 2016 9:33 pm

I'm trying to get my bass stem which is a direct input with effects to send to 3 different loop track stems but when the loops play back the effects aren't playing on the loop but only in the direct bass channel. any suggestions to send the effects to the loop channels and have the loops record the effects???

For this explanation. Try it with a blank set for now and then see if it would work. Also, I'm not sure if you're using Looper or Session clips, but it should work for either.

Lastly, this is assuming that you will have the fx recorded while you play the bass, not fx that you would add after recording a loop.

Create an audio channel and set its monitoring to In (doesn't need to be armed), for its input choose the channel of your bass instrument. Add an effect, like Amp, just one or two fx to do the example.

Create three additional channels. Have all those channels receive their audio from the Bass/fx channel, not receiving audio directly from your bass instrument.

If the loops will be session Clip loops, set those 3 channels to 'Off' for monitoring but Arm all three channels. They will now be silent but still be able to record clips at any moment and play the clips that you just recorded.

If the loops will be recorded using Looper instances, set monitoring to In, arming might not be necessary (or even possible), but all three will receive audio from the first channel. Add a Looper to each of those channels and set the routing in Looper for audio to Never.

Now you have three channels that will receive audio from your original channel.

Your original channel will always be available to play your instrument and never be silenced. But you'll still be able to capture ideas quickly from the other 3 channels and loop them.

The recorded loops will have the sound of the instrument with the effects recorded into them because the audio is coming from that instrument channel that has the fx.

When the fx are turned off, do you hear the original sound?

Are you using Session Clips or are you using instances of Looper?

What should be happening is that your instrument goes into the instrument channel.

The three additional channels should receive audio from the original channel.

The original channel should still output to Master.

I usually just upload to an image hosting site and copy the URL.

I tried the method I mentioned and it seemed to work. The channels with Looper in them, had monitoring set to in, and did not require any channels to be armed.

You have to change the image 'share'ing settings to Public

Alternatively, there is a really nice Ableton group on Facebook. You could post an image up there and ask for help (chances are, I'll see it and be able to assist).
