You find this in most major DAW's including Cubase, Pro Tools, Sonar, Digital Performer - and BitWig. Very sad that this is still not in the latest update, even though many good improvements are out.
I accidentally made a new feature request to before seeing this thread, sorry!

No worries, Tuomas! I took the liberty of quoting it here:
If layered MIDI editing is introduced in Live 10, I'll even forgive the ancient pitchbend bug and lacking VST3 support.
Also, remember to register at Centercode and vote for the feature! https://ableton.centercode.com/project/ ... 6EEAB3263Atuomas_nikkinen wrote:Hi cool people at Ableton!![]()
Would you please seriously consider implementing multiple midi clip/track editing (in one view) ? This includes note and automation editing. An overlapping feature request is editing multiple automation curves of one clip in one view (e.g. modulation and expression).
This is possible in most DAW's, including Cubase, Pro Tools, Sonar, Digital Performer - and even BitWig. I love Live and have used it for many years now, but lacking this rather basic functionality is an unfortunate dealbreaker for my current work of writing film music. BitWig would be closest to what I'm looking for, but I would hate to lose all the cool things in Live.
Currently I need to jump back and forth between multiple instrument tracks, over and over again, trying to remember their contents note by note in your head, when e.g. writing harmonic passages for multiple instruments. Think about writing chords for an orchestra, each section playing one note. Getting the orchestra to play just one good-sounding chord takes a long time. Building any kind of harmonic (orchestral) film music just takes too long to make it worthwile with Live.
Good discussion on the subject (started four years ago): https://www.ableton.com/answers/edit-mu ... midi-clips

I do not understand why Ableton have not yet implemented this feature.

Re: multiple midi editing and inline editing
Implement that feature please! I would pay anything to have that feature added. From a composer´s point of view Ableton is absolutely useless. capturing an idea yeah sure, but developing it further is almost impossible for me in Ableton. that asides it makes so much sense to see the "big picture" of a composition. Having spend quite a couple of years in Logic and Cubase I was amazed how fast one can capture ideas in Ableton but the longer I work with it the more frustrated I get with it. The only reason I haven´t switched to Bitwig Studio yet is that I have build such a vast library of presets (thousands, basically EVERY preset of EVERY freakin´plugin I own got racked for push) and max4live devices (hundreds) over the years that it would be crazy to abandon all that work (although I´m close)
Sometimes an end with terror is better than terror withoud an end.
Implement it or I´ll be gone!

I'd love this feature. Please put it in Ableton Live 9.7 at least.
Make some music!
