Session Overview for APC Mini and APC Key 25

Post by Buleriachk » Tue Sep 30, 2014 7:01 pm

We (well, ok, me anyway) desperately need a script for the APC Mini and the APC Key 25 that provides Session Overview (like Push and the APC40/Mk2) instead of the stupid incremental track/scene matrix configuration that exists now.

I can't believe that some idiots at Akai/Ableton approved the present configuration, but it is what it is ..... Until this is changed, these units are practically useless if you have organized your sets in banks..... Until then, it is back to the Launchpad and my nanoKontrol...)

At least the APC40 Mk2 works as it should, but I'm not taking it out of the living room without a Decksaver (which should be available in October, hopefully)...

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Right now, it doesn't support either of the above contollers, but maybe Isotonic, Native Kontrol, or L95 can provide a solution if Akai/Ableton won't.

Have you tried it? We haven't claimed support as we don't have either to test with...

Correct me if I[m wrong, but I according to your documentation, I think I would have to have two controllers running simultaneously to work at all; (e.g.) a Launchpad as master, and an APC Mini as slave, which would defeat the portability of the APC Mini.

In that case, I would just as well use just a Launchpad, and forget about the sliders.

(The point is that either of these controllers should allow changing banks using the arrow keys, rather than moving the track/scene incrementally.... or both, possibly by cycling through shift options.....)

yeah you need two, one follows the other... You need to canvas Ableton directly to get this feature change, it won't have been specified or costed into the remote script from their end, any form of new script may well lose functionality with a future version so you'll either have to do it yourself or pay repeatedly for someone to keep fixing it...

By the deathly silence around your request you can assume:

a, no one needs it
b, no ones bought one yet...

I'd say the latter is fairly true as units are thin on the ground....

I'll ask if there are any plans but if it's not got a shift button??

I've already written both Akai and Ableton several times at each of their contact points: t/s, forums, suggestions, etc....

When I saw the APC Mini and Key 25, I thought they'd be much popular than they seem to be at present, and I wonder if the lack of Session Overview has anything to do with it (like it does for me, since all my sets are arranged in banks...)

Both units have shift buttons, but need to cycle through options, since the shift is used to set user functions for the other controls. A second shift press could put in into Session Overview, and cycle through until the default...

Also, they seem to be in most of the online stores now....

Users, who are looking for Session Overview implementation for Ableton Live may download this script:

I must be missing here what you've actually done with our script? Your video looks like a standard clone of what we've already implemented...

In terms of functionality it is a clone. The minor functional difference: a user can choose which button to use to activate Session mode.

However there are 2 important differences:
* it works with the latest Ableton 9.6.2. In the moment of implementation, yours worked with 9.6.1 only, because Ableton changed API.
* it's open source. My intention was mostly to provide open commented code as an example for a feature, which is trivial to implement. So people can learn from it. If the project would be shared via github somewhere, I would simply contribute to it.

Hi,
I wanted to add to midiscripts.net comment.

I was not happy with the default button combinations of APC mini and wanted the Session Overview feature as well. This is what I came up with: https://github.com/JOJ0/ableton-live9-remote-scripts

My code is based on a a guy called PHS github repo and midiscripts.net code. Both of them helped me a lot to finish this project (unfortunately I am not really a programmer and it turned out that Ableton's midi scripts are not the best choice for a beginner haha).

Currently it only works with Live 9.6.1, I was to lazy yet to see what midiscripts.net changed in the code to make the step to 9.6.2. Maybe I would be more motivated if someone would really really want my version with 9.6.2. ;-)

And BTW @midiscripts.net: did your code ever make it to github.com? would be nice and super useful for others to learn from! go for it man!

Hope that helps anyone!
all the best
