HOW TO: Use a single effects rack with multi channel output

Post by manwamullet » Tue Jul 26, 2016 4:48 pm

Hello, I have a problem I need help solving.

I am running a live set with stems from studio recordings. The stems are broken up into Kick, Snare, MiscDrums L+R, Bass, Pads L+R, etc etc and are sent to FOH using the MOTU 16A.

We are doing this so our FOH engineer has access to all instruments for individual EQing, compressing, etc depending on varying live environments.

I am using a Midi Fighter Twister to control an FX rack made up of Traktors 12 (in Guitar Rig) and Ableton FX and would like to use one instance of this rack to effect the master track. Since I am not using a Master out, how can I effect all channels with a single rack and have the effected sounds be sent to their individual channels?

Thanks in advance,
Drew

You can't.
If you really need this, your sound guy needs a laptop.
MacBook Pro 13" Retina i7 2.8 GHz OS 10.13, L10.0.1, M4L.
MacStudio M1Max 32Go OS 12.3.1

Thanks for the response.

Damn. Really? Couldn't I use Sends/Returns to make it happen?

Can you be more specific? What would be on the FOH laptop?

Thanks,

Could you draw a picture of what you are trying to do?

The weirdest part is where you have multiple channels put through a single effect at the same time, but then want them to be output individually.

You'd either need to output them as a whole, use the same instance of the effect in each individual channel, or not use the effect and let the FoH add the effect. (Or have the FoH be able to control volumes of stuff inside your computer somehow...but you'd need to ask if they are okay with that because not all people want to deal with high maintainance setups when they are comfortable with their own tools)

The only simple way I can think of working this would be to have an instance of the effect on each channel being sent to FOH, but all mapped to the same set of controls. Obviously higher CPU load and (depending on what effects are used) mightn't sound 100% the same, but would be relatively simple to implement if those aren't deal breakers.

Or you could :

send all your tracks to FOH
The sound guy does his mixing, put the sum on two separated channels, send it back to you
you route this to a stereo track, apply effect,
send this stereo track to 2 ext outs, back to FOH.

If you've got two spare outputs and if you're not drunk when patching, this is the way i think you should go.
