Link Jam
Link Jam
Has anyone been part of a Link jam? What was your experience like?
We had 12 instances of Live synced together at once. Each computer's audio was routed to a mixer then out to a the room speakers. Using Push to program parts and launch Clips, we were able to create new music together that stayed in time. It was as easy as connecting each device to the same network and turning on Link. It was a lot of fun.

Re: Link Jam
i had several LINK jams already, in the studio with desktops, latpos and iOS devices and on live on stage once with just 2 laptops, with both WiFi and LAN cables.
I was immediately impressed by LINK, as you don't even need to setup latency compensation as opposed to MIDI, and the freedom from master/slave opens up a whole new world of jamming and interacting.
also happy that you don't need to setup a network if you just jam with 2 computers, a few seconds after plugging the LAN cable you're set to go, and it just works.
We recorded the LINK jam we did at the club last month, it's here on mixcloud

Re: Link Jam
I've jamming with my favorite app, Midi Link Sync which allows a drum machine to be the master. So Live and my Tempest can play along together, no external snyc! I'm surprised more people aren't really excited about Link.

i've read nothing negative at all on it...
and störgeräusche's set above is a perfect example of how it can be used... i wish it would have existed 5-10 years ago when i was really putting serious effort into making music.

Re: Link Jam
I was talking about Link today...can you tell me more?
For many years my band tried and failed to sync. Occasionally we'd have temporamentally good results, but nothing we could go on stage with.
Until, I fixed it all by buying an amazing computer that could just run all our stuff at once.
Of course the next step was to buy better VSTs and out-grow the amazing computer....

So you don't need internet? I replaced the wifi card with FireWire in my music computer so as to get a better soundcard...It does have a lan socket though...can we just run the two computers together via a lan cable?also happy that you don't need to setup a network if you just jam with 2 computers, a few seconds after plugging the LAN cable you're set to go, and it just works.

Re: Link Jam
Personally, I've never tried it with just a cable. I have at least used a router. If it works using only one cable between two computers that would be nice to know
Has anyone done that? Any confirmation?

Re: Link Jam
I confirm that just a LAN cable between 2 computers will work -since several years the ethernet ports on laptops are self-switching so you don't even need to bother to get a crossover cable.
Edit: tried w/ macbook pro - win laptop / mac - mac / win - win. it just works.
I haven't tried to LINK 3 computers wia LAN cables, but I will soon and will report.

I am also very surprised than LINK practically went under the radar, so to say, as it got almost no echo (yet). regardless of the hype it might generate or not - props again to Ableton for this wonderful tool.

Re: Link Jam
In iOS it has drastically improved syncing of apps. Especially multiple apps running on the same device.
I am hoping that Ableton will encourage developers to use Link on Mac and Windows computers. For example in Traktor or Maschine. Or between DAWs. Etc. even with standalone versions of synths. Oh, and who can forget video software?

at least one of them will have to be Windows so you can have more than one NIC. i'd love to know if that works... please post up if you get around to it.
