All clips of a track with same MIDI note editor zoom level?

Post by JayDeLux » Wed Aug 31, 2016 5:00 pm

Hello,

Let's say I have a long list of MIDI clips on a track. I want to delete all the duplicates.
A) I understand there is NO mechanism to automatically delete or instantly highlight identical clips of a track in Ableton - can you confirm?
B) Assuming 'A)' how can I have all the MIDI note editor of all clips on a track reset to the same zoom level? It would make it easier for me to visually compare the clips and delete them by hand.

At least I don't know of a good way. In Arrangement I sometimes uses Max For Live app "Alias Clips", which in theory could keep track of all siblings and change color to make them stand out. Typically in Session you wouldn't use something like this though.

The best way to avoid this as it stands now, as far as I know anyway, is prevention. That means naming clips properly and change the name and possibly shade when you make a new version of an existing clip. It could also be an idea to group MIDI files and have the instrument in a separate track, if yu can handle such a thing.

Unfortunately I don't know a way to do this. Potentially some automation could do this, but I'm not sure how exactly.

I had a look at the ClyphX manual to see if there was any hope for getting to the zoom of the clip. It doesn't look hopeful but I found this on page 13:
"CLIP LOOP SHOW Zoom in or out to show the Clip’s entire Loop. This will do nothing if the Clip isn’t visible or its Loop is off."

If this could be executed on all clips, they would at least be on the same zoom level if the loop was the same, so easier to discern. But that would involve getting them all visible one by one I think.

The Clip zoom may be in the API and reachable, but I still see no obvious way to get to that. I am not versed in ClyphX.

You could export the clips (one by one) and use a tool to find duplicates on filelevel?

Thank you for confirming this is not something feasable off the shelf.
- Thank you for having shared ClyphX, I did not know about this tool, even though it does not answer the question, I'll look closer what it does.
- Thank you for the suggestion of comparing the clips at the file level lol you guys are very creative, much appreciated.
 I think I will take the advice of trying to keep my stuff more organised and less prolific which is something I should practice more if I want to ever finish something...
