How to trigger Live clips from Logic Pro

Post by markdr » Fri Jun 12, 2015 10:51 am

Hi there,

I would like to be able to play (trigger) clips in Live from Logic Pro. So I would program or record a midi sequence in Logic's pianoroll which should trigger specific audioclips in Live. But i can't figure out how to accomplish this.

This is what i tried so far:
1. I gave the audioclips in Live a specific midi (keyboard) note (e.g. track 1, clipslot 1 = C1 / track 1, clipslot 2 = C#1 / track 2, clipslot 1 = D1 and so on).
2. Tried to trigger these clips by playing the corresponding notes on my midi keyboard, which works fine
3. Recorded a few midi notes in the pianoroll in Logic
4. Assigned the track with the midi sequence to a Rewire instrument.

Then i'm stuck because there seems to be no way to connect this Rewire instrument so that it triggers the corresponding clips in Live.
I know that i can trigger midi instruments in Live from Logic's pianoroll but is there also a way to do this when you want to trigger audioclips?

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

(Using Live 6 and Live 8, Logic Pro 9, Mac Os 10.8.5)

I have no experience with Logic, but what I would try is using a virtual Midi port between Logic and Live instead of rewire.

But maybe someone else can suggest more help 8)

As far as I know Logic is a oneway street. You can only feed into Logic, not send anything out from Logic.

And interesting, but I've never heard of anybody firing Live clips via another DAW.

You can not control outboard gear, like synths for instance, with Logic?!

Hm, yes you can. Good point. But I’m pretty sure in the Rewire world you can only rewire other DAWs into Logic. you can’t rewire Logic out to another DAW.

But on the overall question, is it possible to launch clips in Live via another DAW as the control source? I get you could probably have a hardware controller assigned to Live to do that, but I’ve never heard of programming something directly in another DAW. Sounds like he wants Live to be seen as a third party plugin.

That's why I suggested a virtual Midi port.
You send the note information over that Midi port out of Logic and use the other end of that Midi port as an incoming port in Live. Now this note information looks to Live as if it comes from an outside controller.

I do something similar within Live. I route Midi envelope or note information stored in a clip out of Live with such a port and then route the other end of it back in.
Now I can assign this Midi information to clip slots or other parameters.
It's a very elegant way of controlling parameters that are on other tracks than the one where the clip is housed on.
I use Bomes MT for this, but in principle a simple virtual Midi port should do it too. There are free ones around.

Latency needs to be tested I guess, by I have found this to be a quite elegant and stable solution. (Thanks to Pitch Black again for the tip btw. 8) )

Search for one of Pitch Blacks latest (maybe a month back) posts in some other thread. (he was not the thread starter) He explains it with links and names for these virtual Midi port solutions and even screen shots 8)

The search term should be something like "Midi Loopback"

Hi guys,

I figured it out using Toms tip:
- created a virtual midiport "To Live" in Mac Os "Audio/Midi configuration"
- created a 'normal' instrument in Logic (so no Rewire). Selected the virtual midiport "To Live"
- in Live's preferences set the remote of the "To Live" midiport to on.
- now i can programme midi notes in Logic which trigger audio clips in Live.

The reason i was looking for this option is that I do all my composing, recording and mixing in Logic but like to make samples in Live, using the warp function and all the cool effects. I used to bounce these samples on a certain (random) tempo and pitch but now i would like to keep the possibility to change tempo and pitch before actually exporting them to Logic and use them in my arrangement.

Very cool, thanks!

I noticed no latency, so far!

This is the conclusion I also came to and wanted to add my experience to this thread. I'm using the IAC buses inside Mac OS X to send MIDI to and from Logic and I'm finding it works pretty well. Rewire is useless once you take into account all the limitations so don't even bother.

I've actually taken it one step further. I have it set up like this: Push 2 > Live > IAC Bus 1 > Logic (where clip trigger notes are recorded) > IAC Bus 2 > Live. It works best if you have Logic play an empty one bar clip first which lets Live sync to Logic, then the next clip notes you play (either live or recorded in Logic) will be in sync.

I've been working mostly in Logic for the last 15 years and this is really enabling me to integrate the two systems and use Push 2 to control some things in Logic. I've been remixing some old tracks using Live and Logic together and it has also helped me learn Live gradually without just being thrown in at the deep end.
