Midi Sync Problem with 5.02b5

Post by krikor » Mon Sep 12, 2005 3:31 pm

I have tried different set ups and several times before i made this post, to make sure this was reproducible, i use in live situation a EchoIndigo IO card and a UC33 controller that send midi sync out to a doepfer midi to sync24 for my 606, i aslo use a MFB502, that is linked through the midi thru of the doepfer, or or get direct sync from the evolution if i don't need the 606:

the midi latency output in the preference panel is not active in anyway, i have to switch on the latency compensation in the option window and set it on the main output board to get something effective, switching the midi clock between patern and song does not help in anyway.

if i load an empty set and hit play the 606 and MFB start perfectly
if i load a prepared set with samples and effect , blablabla, the 606 starts, it sometimes get out of sync (no big deal), but the MFB just does not start!!!
This is reproducible, with or without the 606 and the doepfer...

It seems that as soon as live is getting heavy usage on cpu and ram, it makes the midi sync to change it's behavior, just as if the midi sync was not prioritaire on the usage list?
this is a major problem for me as the midi sync is very important in my set.

Users: anyone has a similar problem.
Ableton: can you consider this or at least give an explanation to it?

thank you
K

When adjusting the MIDI sync offset, and setting either Pattern or Song Mode in Lives Preferences, make sure that you have selected the correct MIDI output device first:

Select the MIDI out device that you want to use to send out MIDI Clock, then adjust the latency and type for this device. These settings are set individually for every MIDI out device.

Are you sure that you have tried to use the pattenrmode? The problems That you describe, sound as if you where trying to use the "Song" mode with Hardware which does not support Song Position Pointers.

I've been syncing my Jomox xbase to Live with my Motu Fastlane. I've had to set my reset my sync delay sometimes from -35ms and then had to change it to -46ms other days. I don't know what can cause this, but after I get it running with the proper setting, it seems to be synced fine. I can't seem to find out what is the factor that is changing my delay requirement sometimes.

You are starting your set from the VERY beginning by pressing stop twice first, right? And only send midi clock. I think sending MTC would mess up your sync and the MFB doesn't read MTC anyway.

I just got a MF-502. Cool little box...sounds like kraftwerk or something ;) I will have to see later if I can get it to sync....

Seems strange it would work for you with a blank set only though.

Can you try a different midi interface?

Same issues here...

Post by sasoriza » Mon Sep 12, 2005 8:29 pm

Hello everybody....

Got some midi sync issues that I can get my head around and haven't seen other postings that quite fit this bill.

I switched over to Live 5, upgrading from live 4, and once I did, I couldn't get my external groove box (Korg ES-1) to sync up to midi beat clock anymore. I had this working fine with Live 4, as I was using both Live as a master sequencer and slaving the groove box and utalizing it's sequencer to control its own onboard sounds.

I have tried adjusting the individul midi delay parameters under the preferences (I know there is individual delay compensation setting for each). However, once I finally do manage to get this matched up, it will not stay in sync if stop and play again. Seems like the more load on the CPU I give it, the harder it is for this to sync up.

Seems like a bug to me. I can't understand why every other program runs fine including live 4.

Please let me know if you have any ideas before I shoot an email out to Ableton.

Thanks kindly

Have you tried the the latest beta? You an switch the midi interface to 'pattern' mode, which sorted this out for me with my ER-1 and EA-1.

try turning off PDC. My external gear (including an ES-1) wont sync properly when PDC is enabled, but is solid when its off.

Thanks for the info...these forums are great and the support is much appreciated. The suggestion about turning off the PDC worked perfectly and all is in sync.

Cheers

Hi krikor,

in your post you talked about two problems:
1. The MFB behaves normal with an empty Live set but not with a certain larger Live set.
2. "Sometimes" the 606 gets out of sync

Firstly let us concentrate on the first issue:

Assumed you have connected the UC33 MID out directly to the MFB (not via the MIDI Thru of the sync24). Then...
1. Start Live
2. Now when you start the (empty Live set) via Start/Stop from Transport or via <space> key the MFB starts and stops too, right?
3. Please try if it works too when you start and stop the set via scrub by clicking at any beat position in the scrub area in the arranger view.
4. If this works too, then add a simple audio file into an audio track and add
effects to increase the CPU usage and try if it still works.

regards,
Alex

Hi all.

On the latest beta (5.0.2b5) I'm not experiencing any problems. I have a Korg ES1, ER1 and EA1 hooked up to Live with MIDI clock and they all start together and are in sync.

However, on Live5.01, I have exactly the problems that you are describing and, as somebody else said, I didn't experience the problem in Live4. Live5 introduced the bug but I think they have now fixed it with the latest beta :)

I am syncing them in "Pattern Mode" with a Midi Clock Sync delay of around -7ms.

I have PDC turned on too without any problems.

Aside from my own Live sets, I tried my Electribes synced with the included Distortion by MRoc demo set and didn't experience any problems.

Problem is the software

Post by sasoriza » Tue Sep 13, 2005 11:11 pm

So, after I thought I solved the midi sync issue by turning off the PDC, I later realized that this only works for small sessions. Any strain on the CPU will throw things back out of sync.

I took the advice and tried the beta version...everything works well with the new pattern mode setting as previously stated.

Evidence that it is the software indeed!!!!

My only problem is that this Beta version will expire on the 20th. I have a performance and master session to give on the 22nd and 23rd. I wrote Ableton support to see if I can get anymore answers.

I'll keep you all posted.

Don't worry about it expiring.

In my experience, Ableton always release another version on the day that it expires :)
