PS: he's very slow at updating, because he always fears things will be broken when updating...
I don't know which version he has, perhaps 9.6 or even 9.2 ?

Most likely if he is on an older version of Live than you he will not be able to open the project. If he has Live 9 installed, just tell him to update, it's free afterall.

His fear are IMHO unfounded but I don't know what he's using. Why do you need to update?
You could also have both versions installed and make sure you use the older for your shared projects. On Mac you just rename the app and put them side by side. A bit more involved in Windows.
