A Way To Save Clips Without Copying Samples To User Library?
Hello community,
I've been wanting to know if there is a better way at doing this and wanted some advice and wondering if anyone could help please. I have all my audio samples stored in folders that are NOT in my ableton 9 user library, but I want save a clip for instance for later use. I don't want to make another copy of the audio samples I used to make that clip and have them in my user library since I already have them in my audio samples folder already. But I also want to my clips to have all that info needed when I go back and grab that clip and try and use it, it says files are missing and such and doesn't have all the info.
Is there a way to point the location to my custom samples folder I setup in the Preferences? I tried to test it out by editing a audio file and consolidating it and they dragging it to a folder to save the clip and selecting to not copy anything on the popup window when it asks since I don't want doubles of samples and want it to look for my audio sample in my custom folder if there's a way. When I then make a new live set and drag the clip over it says files are missing in red on the bottom.
Just wondering if there's a way to do this otherwise I would just have a bunch of duplicate samples in 2 different folders. I know I could just put all my custom samples in my user library somewhere but wanted to know if there's any other solution. any help is greatly appreciated.

Add the sample library root folders to the Live browser. If you use a sample from here just choose "don't copy" as the option. The samples will be referenced where they are also after you save the clip to your user library.
In macOS I have chosen to keep external libraries in ~/Library/Audio/Samples and I also install my own into a subfolder. Sample projects under processing I've put into ~/Documents/Music/Creations/Sample projects.

Thanks for getting back to me. Could you please tell me where to add these too? Are you talking about just adding my custom sample libraries to the My Places Section? If so I have them located in the places section already.Stromkraft wrote:Add the sample library root folders to the Live browser. If you use a sample from here just choose "don't copy" as the option. Yes. Great, then you can just use "Don't Copy"? What happens if you do?drum infected wrote:Thanks for getting back to me. Could you please tell me where to add these too? I tested out a couple of things.
First I grabbed a audio sample from library folder in places section (we'll call it scream.wav) and put it into warp mode and chopped and Called the audio file screamtest.wav when I consolidated the whole file and then after I dragged that screamtest.alc clip to my folder where I store stuff I use for later use in songs. Then I opened a new set and dragged the scream.alc clip I made and says sample offline and media files are missing
Next I just opened up the scream.wav and put it in warp mode and just added some warp markers and moved them around and alterted them for the test and then dragged the scream.alc clip over to my storage folder. I then opened up a new set and dragged the scream.alc clip and it worked!!!
I appreciate the help, it got me to at least understand how to do this with clips that are not consolidated, but do you know of anyway I can do this with consolidated audio files and saving the clips? I even tried consolidating the audio clip without renaming it and it I still come up with media file missing for that. Thanks again

Re: A Way To Save Clips Without Copying Samples To User Library?
I don't have this issue with consolidated clips I think, but I work very little with audio clips from my set, put into an instrument. All my samples are put into my libraries that are added in the Live browser. The audio files, if referenced, are inside my project folders and if I move that, any source files there cannot be referenced, which is to be expected.drum infected wrote:

In order to understand your problem, then break it down to where your audio files are and where you want them to be. They should end up in your library OR in the project folder of the set that needs them.
If I read you right, in this case you DO want to copy the consolidated file to your library when saving, or alternatively move it to your sample library manually and reference it from there. I don't see why you'd want it in the project if you expect to be able to reference it from new sets in other projects.
