Ableton referencing files in trash bin on my mac?

Post by jhm1138 » Wed Dec 21, 2016 11:53 pm

I emptied my trash on my computer the other day and when I opened up a project I was working on, one of the audio files of a one shot I was using in a drum rack could not be found. Seeing where this sample was located, it appeared that Ableton was referencing it from a folder in my trash can that I deleted from my sample library a few weeks ago. I was working on this track with no problems until I decided I should empty the trash bin then the next time I opened up the project the missing sample message appeared.

Luckily the track I was working on sucks anyways and I re-referenced it and fixed it up...but it seems like Ableton should not be referencing files in the trash bin as if its a perfectly legit thing to do. Getting the missing sample message after the trash is emptied is a little late IMO. I believe a collect and save would have fixed this before the trash got emptied. It leaves me wondering, is there some type of setting to prevent this from happening in the future? Or is this a bug? It's super annoying that it did that.

Likely you did that yourself. How likely is it that Live on its own chose a random sample you put in the trash?

More likely is that you added the sample from another place and later you moved it to the Trash. The trash is just a place on your drive until you empty it.

Ableton could add a feature that warns that referenced samples are in the Trash. You can make suggestions like that at Ableton Support Or Centercode Suggestions. (Signup needed)

Probably more of an OS issue than a Live one too, there's a lot of OSX apps that can still access files if they are moved to the trash.

Stromkraft that is correct I might have been a little unclear originally but yes, basically I used a sample and then deleted that samples original location. Since I deleted it via the ableton browser it knew to change the referenced location to the trash where all deleted things go. It did not start off referenced from the trash.

I agree that the trash is just another location on the computer but I am surprised that ableton would treat it as just another location with no warning. I will have to make that suggestion.
