Which MIDI port you use probably won't make a lot of difference as long as the sync or track or whatever you want is turned on for that port. Remember on USB it's the output you want. MIDI is going from your computer to the Volca so you want the USB/MIDI out not the in (Live will sometimes list both). Likewise if you use the soundcard MIDI you're using the soundcard MIDI out into the Volca MIDI. Apologies if you know this already.

The soundcard MIDI is at least a dedicated port and allegedly 5 pin MIDI has marginally more precise timing but I've never been able to tell the difference. My Volcas are both on USB-> MIDI.

Ok I think I made it ok till now. You can see how I just set the MIDI preferences below ? I chose to use the USB MIDI cable like you to send the MIDI IN my korg (just for the midi clock to be synchronized). It is ok but I always have the same problem when I first turn on Ableton I have to lit/unlit buttons on the MIDI preferences for the KORG to resync I dont know why it doesn't stays SYNC.

Eventually If i made something wrong I made a little Paint of the plugs in my computer like this you can more easily compare the MIDI preferences of ableton with my set up, tell me what do I have to lit up please , if I made something wrong just tell me i feel like i'm nearly there ^^

Something I dont understand too is why does the outputs of the Launchkey or the USB MIDI cable are duplicated ? IS it normal to have 2 outputs for my novation launchkey and 2 outputs for the midi cable ? Maybe i'm still doing something wrong... :x

Edit: I dont know if it is important but I forgot to precise that my I make appear my KORG as an Audio Channel in Ableton.

Thank you a lot for the time you're spending for me all of you :)

Ah I don't know why you have to reset the sync each time. Doesn't happen for me. Does it still do that if you use a MIDI cable from the interface?

Regarding the keyboard showing up twice, I've noticed that happening as well with some Novation gear. It might be because you have it set up as a control surface and a MIDI in - maybe the MIDI preferences are picking it up as both things. You will probably find one will work and the other won't. Generally speaking I think if you have it as a control surface you don't need the MIDI in in the preferences turned on but not 100% sure. You also seem to have it as a control surface three times - you should only need it once.

With my volcas I use the external instrument plugin which will let you specify MIDI out and audio in in the same track. It may help to set the MIDI out to the beats to MIDI channel 10 as well, that is the default channel for drums and the beats is set to it by default. You can set the MIDI channel in the MIDI track out or the ext instrument out.

Can you explain me what is this external intrument plugin and how do use it ? Because on my ableton i'm only able to create an AUDIO CHANNEL or a MIDI CHANNEL but not the two in juste 1 Channel ... :/

OK if you look in instruments you will find one called "external instrument". If you drag it into a MIDI track you can see it has a MIDI out and an audio in, which you can hook up to your Beats, letting you use it like a VST or Ableton instrument.

Here's a picture of mine (the MIDI and audio ports are just how I have mine set up, yours will be whatever MIDI and audio ports you use)

If you want to sequence it from Ableton the drums are on these notes:
C1 - Kick
D1 - snare
D#1 - Claps
F#1 - closed hat
A#1 - open hat
G1 - low tom
D2 - High tom
C#2 - crash
G3 - agogo
D#4 - claves

In the Korg's MIDI implementation chart it says it doesn't MIDI recieve the crash, agogo and claves but I've tried it and it definitely does.

Thanks a lot for all your answers I'll try this External Instrumental later when I will switch of Ableton's version :) !! Have a nice day
