sidechain compression with fabfilter pro-c

Post by mrpink2460 » Tue Nov 29, 2016 11:46 am

Hi,
has anybody found a solution for the following task:

- I want to use one(!) kick channel as a sidechain source for all(!) my other channels(midi and audio) and use
fabfilters pro-c as prefered vst

(if I use the method, in which I send the kick audio to the sidechained channel, I can`t use this again
for another channel - the known problem. or do I really have to duplicate the kick channel for every
sidechained channels!?! :? )

thanx for your ideas

I'm just basing this off of the explanation from Fabfilters page (http://www.fabfilter.com/help/pro-c/sup ... dechaining) without having the Pro-c on my machine to actually test if this works, which means I might be way off.. .. but it looks like Fabfilter has described one of two ways to achieve this type of routing.

You can "send audio to", but you can "receive audio from" as well.

In this example, audio track 2 is receiving signal from Operator track 1. Image.
If this works the same for the Pro-C, you could have many tracks with each a version of the Pro-C receiving audio from the same kickdrum.

Edit: errr not sure how to tone down that img size :D

Hi,

thanx for answering - unfortunately it does not work, since the routing for the SC has to be
made in the send channel.

(would like to add an attachment now, but i don`t know how to do this right now,
lets try facebook)

Hm, that's a shame. The only alternative I can think of now would be to create a channel that captures all the audio that you want ducked, then add one Pro-C compressor on that one. That would mean that all your audio would get one and the same Pro-C treatment, which might not be what you want.

Using sidechain in 3rd party plugins is a real pain in the arse unfortunately.

On the plus side, Live's built-in compressors work great, and the workflow is miles easier. I'd just use them for sidechain duties.

Here's another thought. I'm not fond of promoting gear addiction and buying more plugins that you need, but it might be worth looking at Cableguys Volumeshaper. It's fairly cheap (€30,-) and takes the 'signal' part out of sidechaining. I use both Pro-C and Ableton's compressor, but for ducking, Volumeshaper takes the cake – it's so simple.

the plugins from cableguys are really nice - i'll give it a try!

found a solution!

1. creating a sidechain-bus-channel(must be an audio track) and say no input at the input type - put monitor option to IN
2. put a compressor of your choice into that channel and declare it as sidechain(depends on your plugin how to do this)
3. make ONE! copy of your kick track (or whatever the source track for your sidechain is)
and send it from the output channel dropdown menu to the first track
- IMPORTEND - choose the sidechain option of your compressor in the dropdown menu below, which appears now

now send every track you want to sidecahin to the first track which now is a kind of pre-master channel, just with the sidechain : )

a littel laborious, but implemented once as a default template works nice to me

cheers guys!

Thanks for sharing. I tried your example, then found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWlXMzp ... e=youtu.be
Both are very useful methods but I really like Volumeshaper, so I've set my template up that way.

mmmm...
this ducks volume, yes...

but according to the topic which says:
"sidechain compression with fabfilter pro-c"
(or a compressor plugin of your choice)
this doesnt help me out in any way.
